Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
Rwanda can be visited year-round for gorilla trekking, but the dry seasons offer the most comfortable conditions:
- June to September – the long dry season. Trails are drier and gorillas often descend to lower, more accessible elevations. Peak season with highest permit demand.
- December to February – the short dry season. Excellent conditions with fewer visitors than the June–September peak.
The rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) bring lush, photogenic forest conditions and lower accommodation rates, but trails can be muddy and trekking is more physically demanding. Gorilla trekking itself is still very much possible during the rains — and permits are easier to secure.
What to Pack for Rwanda Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park involves hiking through dense rainforest at altitude. Proper preparation makes a significant difference to your experience:
