Trek duration ranges from half an hour to nine hours of hiking. Once gorillas are located, visitors spend approximately one hour observing them. The full day includes early morning briefing, the trek itself, gorilla encounter time, and return journey.
Trekkers must be at least 15 years old. Good general health is essential. Individuals with contagious illnesses should not participate to prevent disease transmission to gorillas. Pre-trek fitness preparation is highly recommended.
Maintain at least 7 meters (21 feet) distance. Avoid loud noises and sudden movements. Photography permitted without flash. Follow guide instructions strictly. No touching or feeding gorillas.
Permits should be booked well in advance as they sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons (June-September, December-February). Book through Uganda Wildlife Authority or a reputable tour operator like Nature Nest Safaris.

Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga hold roughly half of the world's mountain gorillas, with a permit of US$800 per person; Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is closer to the capital and the permit is US$1,500. Treks last from one to six hours depending on where the family is, and you spend one hour with the gorillas in a group of no more than eight visitors. Minimum age is 15.
Two-day treks from Kigali, 3- to 5-day Bwindi safaris from Entebbe, double-trek trips, the 4-hour gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi (US$1,500), and 7- to 14-day safaris that combine gorillas with chimpanzees in Kibale, the Kazinga Channel, Murchison Falls or the Masai Mara.
Permits are limited to eight people per gorilla family per day and sell out for June to September and the Christmas weeks, so we recommend booking 3 to 6 months ahead. We reserve your permit with the Uganda Wildlife Authority or Rwanda Development Board as soon as you confirm and send the permit copy with your itinerary.
You need to be reasonably fit for steep, muddy forest paths; porters are available for a small fee and are worth hiring. Bring sturdy boots, long trousers, gardening gloves, a rain jacket and a camera without flash. Trekking is possible all year; the drier months of June to September and December to February make the paths easier.
