Ethiopian Airlines flies nonstop from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Addis Ababa, then connects to Nairobi, Entebbe, Kilimanjaro, and Kigali. This is often the cheapest route — round-trip fares from the US East Coast start around $800–$1,200.
Qatar Airways connects via Doha from most major US cities (JFK, ORD, LAX, IAH, MIA). Comfortable aircraft, good connections to Nairobi and Kilimanjaro. Expect $1,000–$1,500 round trip.
KLM via Amsterdam connects to Nairobi, Entebbe, and Kilimanjaro. A great option if you want to break the journey with a night in Amsterdam. Round trips from $1,100–$1,600.
Turkish Airlines via Istanbul connects to Nairobi and Kilimanjaro. Competitive pricing, usually $900–$1,400 from the US.
Total travel time from NYC is typically 16–22 hours including connections. From the West Coast, add 3–5 hours.
Kenya: eVisa required ($51, single entry). Apply at evisa.go.ke at least 72 hours before travel. Processing is usually within 48 hours.
Uganda: eVisa required ($50, single entry). Apply at visas.immigration.go.ug. Allow 3–5 business days.
Tanzania: eVisa required ($50, single entry). Apply at visa.immigration.go.tz. Can also be obtained on arrival at Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam airports, but online is faster.
Rwanda: US citizens get visa on arrival for free (30-day stay). No advance application needed.
East Africa Tourist Visa: If visiting Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda on one trip, the East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) covers all three countries for 90 days. Apply through any of the three countries’ immigration portals.
Safari pricing depends on accommodation level and trip length. Here’s what to budget per person per day in 2026:
Budget safaris: $150–$250/day. Basic lodges and tented camps, shared vehicles, group departures. Great value, genuine safari experience.
Mid-range safaris: $250–$450/day. Comfortable lodges and permanent tented camps, private vehicle and guide, most meals included. This is what most American clients choose.
Luxury safaris: $450–$1,000+/day. Premium lodges and exclusive camps, private vehicle, all-inclusive with drinks, sometimes with bush dinners and private conservancy access.
A typical 7-day mid-range safari in Kenya or Tanzania runs $2,500–$3,500 per person sharing. Add gorilla trekking in Uganda and you’re looking at $4,000–$5,500 for 10 days. These prices include accommodation, meals, park fees, transport, and a professional guide — but not international flights.
June to October is peak season and coincides with American summer vacation. The Great Migration is in the Serengeti and Masai Mara, weather is dry, and wildlife viewing is at its best. Book 3–6 months ahead for peak season.
December to February is excellent for Americans on winter break. Calving season in the southern Serengeti, dry season in Uganda, and pleasant temperatures across East Africa. Less crowded than summer.
March to May is the long rains — lower prices (20–30% discounts) but some lodges close and roads can be challenging. April is generally the wettest month.
November is a hidden gem — short rains bring green landscapes, fewer tourists, lower prices, and the migration herds are moving south through the Serengeti. Great for photography.

East Africa is safe for tourists. Crime rates in safari areas are extremely low — you’ll be with a professional guide at all times. Nairobi and Kampala require normal urban precautions.
Vaccinations: Yellow fever is required for Uganda and sometimes checked at Kenya and Tanzania borders. Recommended: Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and tetanus. Consult the CDC travel page or your doctor 6–8 weeks before departure.
Malaria: Present in most safari areas. Take prophylaxis (Malarone is the most common prescription in the US). Use insect repellent and sleep under mosquito nets.
