Uganda vs Rwanda: The Gorilla Trekking Debate

Mountain gorilla trekking is the single most sought-after wildlife experience in East Africa. With only about 1,063 mountain gorillas left in the wild — split between Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park — this is a genuinely rare encounter. But which country should you choose?

Gorilla Permit Prices: Uganda Is Nearly Half the Cost

The biggest difference is price. A Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs $800 per person in 2026. A Rwanda permit costs $1,500 per person. That’s a $700 saving per person — and for a couple, that’s $1,400 you could put toward extra safari days, a balloon flight over the Serengeti, or a beach extension in Zanzibar.

Rwanda briefly dropped prices during COVID recovery but restored the $1,500 rate as demand returned. Uganda has kept its permits at $800, making it the clear budget winner. Both countries allow a maximum of 8 visitors per gorilla family per day, and the experience itself — one hour with a habituated gorilla family — is identical in format.

The Trekking Experience

Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest): The name says it all. Bwindi’s terrain is steep, dense, and genuinely challenging. Treks range from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are that morning. The forest is thick equatorial rainforest between 1,160m and 2,607m altitude. The reward? An incredibly intimate, wild setting — you’re deep in primary rainforest when you find the gorillas, often surrounded by ancient trees and birdsong.

Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park): The Virunga volcanoes are more open — bamboo forest at higher altitude (2,500m–4,500m). Treks are generally shorter (1–3 hours) and the terrain, while steep, is less dense than Bwindi. The gorilla families here are spread across the volcanic slopes, and on clear days you get stunning views of the Virunga chain.

Getting There from Europe and America

For travellers flying from London, Amsterdam, Paris, or Frankfurt, both countries are well-connected. Kigali (Rwanda) has direct flights from London Gatwick on RwandAir and is a compact, easy-to-navigate city. Entebbe (Uganda) has connections via Addis Ababa, Nairobi, or Dubai.

The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes about 2.5 hours. From Entebbe to Bwindi, it’s either a 9-hour drive through beautiful Ugandan countryside or a 1-hour domestic flight to Kihihi airstrip followed by a short drive. Most European visitors to Bwindi fly in to save time.

For American travellers, both destinations connect via Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), Doha (Qatar Airways), or Amsterdam (KLM). Flight times from New York are roughly 14–18 hours including connections.

What Else Can You Do?

Uganda wins on safari variety. You can combine gorilla trekking with Big Five game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, and Murchison Falls. A 7–10 day Uganda itinerary can include gorillas, chimps, lions, elephants, and Nile boat cruises — all in one trip.

Rwanda is more compact. You can do gorillas, golden monkeys, and Nyungwe Forest chimps within a short, efficient trip. Rwanda works well for travellers with limited time — you can fly in, trek gorillas, and fly out in 3–4 days.

Choose Uganda if you want the best value, a wilder trekking experience, and the ability to combine gorillas with a full safari. Choose Rwanda if you have limited time, prefer a shorter trek, or want a more polished tourist infrastructure.
