1
Arrive Entebbe – Botanical Gardens Birding
Arrive in Uganda and bird the famous Entebbe Botanical Gardens.
Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to your lakeside hotel. In the afternoon, visit the Entebbe Botanical Gardens on the shores of Lake Victoria for an introductory birding session. These lush gardens are a superb warm-up site, hosting species such as the Ross's turaco, grey parrot, African fish eagle, and a variety of sunbirds, weavers, and kingfishers. Your expert ornithologist guide will help calibrate your binoculars and familiarise you with East African bird calls as you build your trip checklist.

2
Mabira Forest Birding
Full day birding in Uganda's largest surviving rainforest.
Drive east to Mabira Forest Reserve, one of Uganda's most important birding hotspots and the largest surviving block of semi-deciduous tropical rainforest in central Uganda. Spend the full day walking forest trails in search of specialties including the Nahan's francolin, forest robin, blue-breasted kingfisher, African pitta (seasonal), and the sought-after Tit-hylia. The diverse understorey supports mixed-species flocks that can yield dozens of species in a single encounter. Mabira's proximity to Entebbe makes it an efficient addition, packing in forest birds before heading north.
Rainforest Lodge Mabira or similar
3
Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park
Drive north to Uganda's largest national park.
Depart Mabira after early morning birding and drive north towards Murchison Falls National Park, stopping at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary along the way for rhino tracking and open-habitat birding. The sanctuary's grasslands and wetlands yield species such as the shoebill (if in the right season), grey crowned crane, and Abyssinian ground hornbill. Continue into the park and arrive at your lodge along the Victoria Nile in time for late afternoon birding around the lodge grounds, where Pel's fishing owl is occasionally spotted at dusk.
Paraa Safari Lodge or similar
4
Murchison Falls Birding & Game Drive
Savannah birding combined with big game viewing.
Start with a dawn game drive focused on birding across the northern bank of the Nile, where open savannah and borassus palm woodland attract species including the Denham's bustard, Abyssinian ground hornbill, red-throated bee-eater, and white-crested turaco. Large mammals such as elephants, lions, and Rothschild's giraffes provide spectacular backdrop to your birding. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise upstream towards Murchison Falls, scanning the riverbanks for rock pratincole, giant kingfisher, Goliath heron, and white-browed coucal. The delta area where the Nile enters Lake Albert is one of the best locations in Africa for the elusive shoebill stork.

5
Budongo Forest – Royal Mile Birding
Walk the famous Royal Mile for rare forest birds.
Drive to Budongo Forest Reserve for a full day on the legendary Royal Mile, a straight stretch of road cutting through magnificent mahogany forest that is arguably Uganda's finest lowland forest birding walk. Target species here include the chocolate-backed kingfisher, yellow-footed flycatcher, Puvel's illadopsis, ituri batis, and the elusive Cassin's hawk-eagle soaring above the canopy. Mixed-species flocks moving through the understorey can produce dozens of sightings in rapid succession. Budongo also supports a large chimpanzee population, and you may hear their calls echoing through the forest as you bird.
Budongo Eco Lodge or similar
6
Transfer to Kibale National Park
Journey south through the Albertine Rift to Kibale Forest.
Depart Budongo and travel south through the dramatic Albertine Rift Valley escarpment, birding along the way at roadside stops where the changing elevation brings new species. Pass through the town of Fort Portal with its stunning views of crater lakes and the Rwenzori Mountains. Arrive at your lodge near Kibale National Park in the afternoon. An evening walk around the lodge grounds and forest edge can produce nightjars, owls, and the melodious calls of the African wood owl. The transition from lowland to mid-elevation forest means a whole new set of species awaits.
Primate Lodge Kibale or similar
7
Kibale Forest Birding & Bigodi Wetland
Forest birding in Kibale and wetland specialties at Bigodi.
Spend the morning birding along the trails of Kibale National Park, a mid-altitude rainforest supporting over 375 bird species. Priority targets include the green-breasted pitta, blue-headed bee-eater, African grey parrot, and multiple species of greenbuls, illadopses, and flycatchers. In the afternoon, visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a papyrus swamp managed by the local community that is home to the spectacular great blue turaco, white-spotted flufftail, papyrus gonolek, and the elusive sitatunga antelope. The contrasting forest and wetland habitats make for an exceptional day's birding checklist.
Primate Lodge Kibale or similar
8
Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Drive south to Queen Elizabeth for open-habitat birding.
Transfer south to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where the habitat shifts dramatically from dense forest to open savannah, crater lakes, and wetlands. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve hosts over 610 recorded bird species, making it one of the most bird-rich parks in Africa. Settle into your lodge on the Mweya Peninsula and enjoy afternoon birding around the crater lakes and acacia woodland, where martial eagles, bateleurs, and African harrier-hawks patrol the skies. The lodge gardens often attract cinnamon-chested bee-eaters, tropical boubous, and grey-capped warblers.
Mweya Safari Lodge or similar
9
Queen Elizabeth Birding & Kazinga Channel
Savannah birding and the legendary Kazinga Channel cruise.
Begin with a dawn birding drive on the Kasenyi Plains, scanning for raptors including the martial eagle, bateleur, and brown snake-eagle alongside charismatic ground species such as the black-bellied bustard, temminck's courser, and pennant-winged nightjar (seasonal). In the afternoon, cruise the Kazinga Channel for a spectacular waterbird experience. Expect malachite kingfisher, pied kingfisher, pink-backed pelican, African skimmer, and vast colonies of cormorants and herons. Hippos and crocodiles bask along the banks while African fish eagles call overhead in one of Uganda's most iconic birding boat rides.
Mweya Safari Lodge or similar
10
Transfer to Bwindi – Ruhija Sector Birding
Journey to Bwindi for Albertine Rift endemic birds.
Drive south through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth, where tree-climbing lions may be spotted, before ascending into the highlands towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Arrive at the Ruhija sector, perched at over 2,300 metres, which is the premier location for Albertine Rift endemic birds. Afternoon birding along the Mubwindi Swamp trail targets the African green broadbill, Grauer's rush warbler, Shelley's crimsonwing, and Regal sunbird. The montane forest atmosphere, shrouded in mist, adds an otherworldly quality to this exceptional birding habitat.
Gorilla Mist Camp or similar
11
Bwindi Birding & Gorilla Trekking
Morning birding and an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience.
Rise at dawn for early birding along the forest edge at Ruhija, targeting any remaining Albertine Rift endemics on your list such as the handsome francolin, Kivu ground thrush, and strange weaver. Then embark on a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to nearly half the world's mountain gorilla population. Trek through dense vegetation with expert trackers until you encounter a habituated gorilla family. Spend a magical hour observing these gentle giants feeding, playing, and resting — a highlight that even the most dedicated birders will treasure forever.
Gorilla Mist Camp or similar
12
Lake Mburo Birding & Return to Entebbe
Final birding stop at Lake Mburo then departure.
Depart Bwindi early and drive to Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda's smallest savannah park but a critical birding stop for species found nowhere else on this itinerary. A morning game drive and walk targets the African finfoot, white-winged warbler, tabora cisticola, red-faced barbet, and the rare shoebill stork along the lake shores. The park's acacia woodland also supports the bare-faced go-away-bird and brown-chested lapwing. After a final tally of your trip list, continue to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight, concluding a comprehensive birding journey through one of Africa's most bird-rich nations.

Testimonials

What Our Travelers Say

“As a lifelong birder, this trip was an absolute dream. We tallied 487 species in 12 days, including 19 Albertine Rift endemics at Bwindi. Our guide Moses had extraordinary ears and eyes — he identified birds by the faintest calls. The gorilla trekking was the emotional highlight. Uganda truly is the Pearl of Africa for birders.”

“Having birded extensively across southern and East Africa, I was blown away by Uganda's species density. The Royal Mile in Budongo alone produced over 60 species before lunch. The itinerary was expertly designed to cover every major habitat, and the logistics were flawless. Cannot recommend Nature Nest Safaris highly enough.”
