Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking – Africa’s Best Chimp Safari Destination
Uganda is widely regarded as the best country in Africa for chimpanzee trekking. With over 5,000 wild chimpanzees living across its forests and national parks, Uganda offers more chimp trekking opportunities than any other East African country — at a fraction of the cost of Rwanda gorilla trekking.
Nature Nest Safaris specialises in Uganda chimpanzee trekking safaris, combining the best chimp forests with gorilla trekking, game drives, and cultural experiences into seamless, tailor-made Uganda safari packages.
Best Places for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda
Uganda has several excellent chimpanzee trekking destinations, each offering a different forest environment and experience. The two most popular are Kibale National Park and Budongo Forest Reserve.
Kibale National Park – Uganda’s Chimp Capital
Kibale National Park in western Uganda is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees — the highest concentration of any forest in East Africa. The park’s primary rainforest near Kanyanchu Visitor Centre is the main base for chimp trekking, with multiple habituated communities tracked daily by expert guides.
Kibale chimpanzee trekking highlights:
- Permit cost: $200 USD per person (standard trekking)
- Chimp habituation experience: $250 USD per person — spend a full day with chimps from dawn to dusk
- Group size: Maximum 6 per trek (standard), 4 for habituation experience
- Viewing time: 1 hour (standard trek), full day (habituation)
- Success rate: Very high — Kibale’s habituated groups are reliably located
- Nearest town: Fort Portal, approximately 35 km from Kanyanchu
Kibale also has 12 other primate species, making it one of the most primate-rich forests on earth. Red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and black-and-white colobus are commonly seen alongside chimpanzees.
Budongo Forest Reserve – Murchison Falls Circuit Chimp Trekking
Budongo Forest Reserve, located adjacent to Murchison Falls National Park in northern Uganda, is the second major chimpanzee trekking destination. The forest is home to over 800 chimpanzees and is the ideal add-on for travellers combining chimp trekking with Murchison Falls game drives and the iconic Nile boat cruise.
Budongo chimp trekking highlights:
- Permit cost: $90 USD per person
- Forest type: Mahogany-dominated tropical rainforest
- Best combined with: Murchison Falls National Park safari
- Location: 30 km south of Masindi town, accessible from Kampala in 4–5 hours
Kyambura Gorge – Queen Elizabeth National Park
Kyambura Gorge (“Valley of the Apes”) in Queen Elizabeth National Park offers a uniquely dramatic chimp trekking setting — descending into a forested gorge cut into the savannah floor. The gorge has a smaller habituated chimp community, making sightings less guaranteed, but the scenery and remote atmosphere are exceptional.
- Permit cost: $50 USD per person
- Best combined with: Queen Elizabeth National Park game drives and Kazinga Channel boat cruise

When Is the Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda?
Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is possible year-round, but conditions vary significantly by season:
- June to August – the long dry season. Best trail conditions, easiest tracking, and peak visitor numbers. Book permits well in advance.
- December to February – the short dry season. Another excellent window with good forest conditions and fewer visitors than peak months.
- March to May and September to November – the rainy seasons. Forests are dramatically lush and green, bird activity peaks, and accommodation rates are lower. Trails are muddier but chimpanzees are still trackable.
Kibale’s chimps are reliably found in all seasons due to the forest’s dense fruit supply, which keeps the community within a predictable range throughout the year.
What to Expect on a Uganda Chimp Trek
A standard Uganda chimpanzee trekking experience follows a familiar pattern:
- Morning briefing: 7:00–7:30 AM at the visitor centre. Rangers explain rules, safety protocols, and the current location of habituated chimp groups.
- Forest tracking: You follow expert guides through the forest, listening for chimp calls, tracking footprints, and following signs of recent feeding.
- Contact: When chimps are located, you spend one hour observing them — grooming, feeding, playing, and moving through the canopy.
- Return: After your hour with the chimps, you return to the trailhead and head back to your lodge for lunch.
Chimpanzees are loud, fast, and unpredictable — nothing like the calm, careful gorilla interactions. They move quickly through the trees, call dramatically, and display boldly. It’s a more dynamic and physically energetic experience than gorilla trekking, and for many visitors, equally or even more exciting.
