Rwanda is the easiest gorilla destination to reach: Volcanoes National Park is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Kigali, so a 2- or 3-day gorilla trek fits a long weekend. Longer Rwanda safari packages add Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzees and the canopy walk, Akagera for a Big Five savannah safari and Lake Kivu to unwind.
Mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in the Virunga volcanoes, 13 primate species in Nyungwe, and lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo and leopard in Akagera since the park's restoration. Kigali itself is clean, safe and worth a day for the Genocide Memorial and the craft markets.
The Rwanda gorilla permit is US$1,500 per person, golden monkey permits US$100 and Akagera entry US$100 per day for foreign visitors. Lodges near Volcanoes range from comfortable guesthouses to some of Africa's most exclusive camps. Combining a Rwanda gorilla trek with Uganda (permit US$800) is a popular way to see gorillas twice.
RwandAir flies direct from London Heathrow, Paris and Brussels to Kigali; Brussels Airlines, KLM, Qatar Airways and Turkish connect with one stop. Most European nationals get a visa on arrival or online, and Kigali Airport is 20 minutes from the city.
