Lake Mburo National Park 2026: Uganda's Walking Safari

Published September 19, 2026 · Nature Nest Safaris · 5 min read

Most safari itineraries from Europe treat Lake Mburo as a lunch stop. Three hours from Entebbe on the road to Bwindi, it is the park people drive through rather than the park they stay in — and that is exactly why it is worth a night. Lake Mburo is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah parks at 370 square kilometres, and it is the only one where you are allowed to get out of the vehicle and walk among the wildlife. For UK and European travellers who have already pictured themselves behind glass in a Land Cruiser, that changes the trip.

What makes Lake Mburo different

Lake Mburo has no elephants and no lions in any reliable numbers. That sounds like a drawback until you understand what it buys you: because the big dangerous species are largely absent, Uganda Wildlife Authority permits guided walking safaris, horseback rides and quad biking here. Nowhere else in Uganda can you do that.

It is also the only Ugandan park with Burchell’s zebra in real numbers — several thousand of them — alongside impala, which the country’s other parks simply do not have. Add topi, eland, buffalo, warthog, klipspringer on the rocky ridges and leopard for the very lucky, and the game list is more varied than the park’s size suggests. Fourteen interconnected lakes sit inside the boundary, which brings hippo, crocodile and roughly 350 bird species, including the shoebill’s smaller relatives and the African finfoot along the papyrus edges.

The three experiences worth booking

The guided nature walk. An armed ranger takes you out at 07:00 for two to three hours toward a salt lick where zebra and impala gather. Being on foot recalibrates everything — you notice dung beetles, you hear the alarm calls, you understand scale. Around $30 per person plus ranger fee.

The Lake Mburo boat trip. Ninety minutes on the lake for about $30, and reliably the best hippo and crocodile viewing of any short Ugandan boat safari. Late afternoon light here is superb for photography.

The Rubanga Forest walk. A patch of closed-canopy forest inside a savannah park, best for birders — narina trogon, harrier hawk, and the cheeky Ross’s turaco. Book the guide at the gate in advance.

Horseback safaris through Mihingo Lodge are the standout for many European guests: riding out among zebra with no engine noise is a genuinely different register of safari, at roughly £70–£110 depending on ride length.

Costs for UK and European visitors

Foreign non-resident park entry is $45 per adult per 24 hours (roughly £34), with children around $25. Vehicle entry adds $30–$50 depending on registration. Activities are charged separately as above. Accommodation spans the full range: budget bandas and campsites at Rwonyo from about £25 per person, mid-range tented camps such as Rwakobo Rock at £90–£140 per person sharing, and Mihingo Lodge at £250–£400 per person for full board.

A comfortable two-night Lake Mburo add-on — transport, park fees, one walk, one boat trip and mid-range accommodation — typically lands between £380 and £550 per person. Against the cost of a gorilla permit it is a small line item, and it fills the awkward travel day between Entebbe and the southwest.

Getting there from Europe

Fly London Heathrow to Entebbe via Nairobi, Doha, Istanbul or Addis Ababa — Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian all work, typically £600–£950 return depending on season. Onward flights from Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt connect through the same hubs. From Entebbe it is a 3.5 to 4 hour drive west on good tarmac to Nshara Gate, which makes Lake Mburo the most accessible savannah park in the country and the natural first or last stop on a Uganda circuit.

Best time to visit

June to August and December to February are the dry months: grass is short, water is concentrated and animals are easy to see on the salt licks. The green season from March to May and September to November brings dramatic skies, far fewer vehicles, lower lodge rates and the best birding, at the cost of muddier tracks. For British travellers tied to school holidays, the July–August window aligns perfectly with peak game viewing — book lodges four to six months ahead.

How to fit it into your itinerary

The classic pairing is Lake Mburo on night one out of Entebbe, then Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth. Reverse it and Lake Mburo becomes a gentle decompression stop after gorilla trekking, which many guests prefer — you are tired, the walks are easy, and the drive back to the airport is short. Either way, one night is enough to justify it and two nights is when it starts to feel like a destination rather than a waypoint.

Uganda’s reputation rests on gorillas, and rightly so. But the walking safari at Lake Mburo is the part of the trip our European clients describe most vividly afterwards — the morning they stood on the ground, in the open, while zebra grazed a hundred metres away.
