Bwindi Gorilla Sectors: Buhoma vs Rushaga vs Ruhija

Published October 7, 2026 · Nature Nest Safaris · 7 min read

Most European travellers book a Bwindi gorilla permit first and only then discover that “Bwindi” is really four different trekking areas, called sectors, spread across a huge forest. Where your permit is issued decides how long you drive, how hard the hike is and what else you can fit in. This guide compares Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija and Nkuringo so you can choose the right one before you pay.

Bwindi gorilla sectors at a glance

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in south-west Uganda is split into Buhoma (north), Ruhija (east), Rushaga (south) and Nkuringo (south-west). Each has its own park headquarters, its own habituated gorilla families and its own lodges. The permit price is the same in every sector: about $800 per person for foreign non-residents at the time of writing, which is roughly €700–750 depending on the exchange rate. Always confirm the current figure with us when you book, as Uganda Wildlife Authority sets the price.

Because the forest is steep and the sectors are far apart by road, you cannot swap sectors on the day. Pick the sector, then book your lodge near it.

Buhoma: the classic, easiest-to-reach sector

Buhoma in the north was the first sector opened for tourism and has the most established lodges, a small village with craft shops and a well-organised trailhead. It suits first-timers who want a smooth, predictable trip.

Rushaga: the most gorilla families

Rushaga in the south has the largest number of habituated gorilla groups of any sector, which matters for two reasons. First, permits are easier to find at short notice, which helps if your dates are fixed by European school holidays or annual leave. Second, it is the sector where the gorilla habituation experience is offered, where you spend more time with a group still getting used to people (a higher-priced permit).

Ruhija: quieter, higher and brilliant for birds

Ruhija sits at higher altitude on the eastern side, so mornings are cool and misty. It has fewer visitors than Buhoma and a reputation among birders for Albertine Rift endemics. Gorilla treks here are often shorter, but the road in is slow and winding.

Nkuringo: the hardest trek, the biggest views

Nkuringo in the south-west is perched on a ridge with sweeping views over the forest and, on clear days, towards the Virunga volcanoes. The trek to the gorillas often begins with a steep descent and ends with a tough climb out. It rewards fit walkers with the most dramatic scenery in Bwindi.

Which sector should you choose?

Sample 5-day plan: Entebbe, Ishasha and Rushaga

This is a pattern we use often for European travellers who want gorillas plus classic savannah wildlife without flying internally.

If you only have a long weekend, our 2-day gorilla trekking adventure uses flights to cut the driving. Honest pros and cons of choosing by sector

Pros: Picking a sector lets you match fitness, budget and dates, and a good fit makes the trek far more enjoyable. You also avoid long unnecessary drives between lodges.

Cons: You cannot guarantee a particular gorilla family, and group allocation is made by rangers on the morning of the trek. Weather also changes trail conditions: even in the drier months, forest trails can be muddy. Read our guide to the best time to visit Bwindi before fixing your dates.

Practical tips for European travellers

FAQ

Which Bwindi sector has the most gorillas?

Rushaga has the most habituated gorilla families, so it usually offers the best permit availability.

Is Buhoma or Rushaga better for a first trek?

Buhoma is easier to organise, with more lodges and a long track record. Rushaga is better if your dates are fixed or you want to add Lake Bunyonyi.

Do all sectors cost the same?

The standard permit is the same price in every sector. Lodge and transfer costs vary by location and standard.

How hard is the hike?

It ranges from about one hour to most of a day, on steep, muddy trails. Rangers consider fitness when assigning groups, so tell them at the briefing.
