Uganda, the “Pearl of Africa,” has rapidly become one of the most sought-after safari destinations in East Africa. From the misty mountains of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to the vast savannahs of Queen Elizabeth National Park, a Uganda safari offers an unparalleled wildlife experience that rivals — and often surpasses — its more famous neighbours.
While Kenya and Tanzania dominate mainstream safari marketing, Uganda quietly delivers experiences that are simply impossible to find anywhere else. Mountain gorilla trekking, tree-climbing lions, chimpanzee tracking, and the chance to spot the elusive shoebill stork make Uganda a wildlife enthusiast’s dream.
Uganda is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offer gorilla trekking permits at $800 per person — significantly more affordable than Rwanda’s $1,500 permits. The experience of sitting metres away from a silverback gorilla in his natural habitat is life-changing.
What to expect: Groups of 8 trekkers are assigned a gorilla family. The trek through dense forest can take 2-8 hours depending on where the gorillas are feeding that day. Once found, you spend one magical hour observing them.
Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda is famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector. This behaviour is extremely rare, observed in only two places on Earth. The park also offers boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel with hippos, elephants, and over 600 bird species, game drives through the Kasenyi Plains, and chimpanzee tracking in the Kyambura Gorge.
The mighty River Nile forces itself through a 7-metre gap before plunging 43 metres into the “Devil’s Cauldron.” Murchison Falls National Park combines dramatic landscapes with excellent game viewing including giraffes, elephants, and the rare Rothschild’s giraffe.
June to September — The long dry season offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. This is peak season for gorilla trekking.
December to February — The short dry season provides another excellent window with fewer tourists and lower prices.
March to May and October to November — The rainy seasons make trekking muddier but gorilla permits are easier to obtain and prices are lower.
Budget safaris in Uganda start from approximately $150-200 per person per day, while mid-range options run $250-400. Luxury lodges and camps can exceed $500 per person per day. Key costs include gorilla trekking permits ($800), chimpanzee tracking permits ($200), park entry fees ($40/day), accommodation ($50-500+/night), and 4×4 safari vehicle hire.
Perfect for travellers with limited time. Fly into Entebbe, drive or fly to Bwindi for gorilla trekking, and return.
