The Most Elusive of the Big Five

Ask any safari guide which of the Big Five is hardest to find, and the answer is almost always the same: the leopard. These solitary, nocturnal cats are masters of camouflage, blending seamlessly into the dappled light of riverine forests and rocky outcrops. Seeing a leopard on safari — especially one walking casually along a vehicle track in broad daylight like this one — is the kind of sighting that makes experienced guides stop and take notice.

What Makes Leopards So Hard to Spot

Leopards are ambush predators. Unlike cheetahs, which hunt on open plains, or lions, which lounge in the open, leopards prefer dense cover. They’re most active at dawn and dusk, spending the heat of the day draped over tree branches or hidden in thick bush. Their rosette-patterned coat provides extraordinary camouflage, breaking up their outline against the bark of trees and the shadows of undergrowth.

They’re also incredibly strong for their size. A leopard can carry prey twice its own body weight up into a tree — a behaviour that evolved to keep their kills safe from lions and hyenas. If you’re lucky enough to see a leopard with a kill hoisted in a tree, you’re witnessing one of nature’s most impressive feats of strength.

Where to See Leopards in East Africa

The Masai Mara is one of the best places in Africa for leopard sightings. The Mara River and its tributaries create ribbons of riverine forest that provide perfect leopard habitat — dense vegetation for cover, with open grassland nearby for hunting. Specific areas like the Talek River and the Mara Triangle are known leopard hotspots.

In Tanzania, the Serengeti’s Seronera Valley is legendary for leopard sightings, particularly along the kopjes (rocky outcrops) where leopards rest and survey their territory. The Lake Manyara National Park is another excellent spot, famous for its tree-climbing lions but equally rewarding for leopard enthusiasts.

Photography Tips for Leopard Sightings

Leopard encounters tend to happen fast — the cat appears, pauses, and disappears into cover before you’ve finished reaching for your camera. Keep your camera ready at all times with a fast shutter speed (at least 1/500s) and a telephoto lens. Leopards are often spotted in low light conditions, so don’t be afraid to push your ISO higher to freeze the action. If the leopard is walking, use continuous autofocus to track its movement.
