Prices vary by location and operator:
Serengeti (Tanzania): $550–$650 per person. This typically includes the flight, a champagne toast upon landing, a bush breakfast cooked in the wild, and transfers to and from your lodge. Tanzania’s TANAPA ballooning concession fee ($40) is usually included.
Maasai Mara (Kenya): $450–$650 per person. Includes the flight, transfers, landing fees, and a champagne bush breakfast. Prices tend to be slightly lower than the Serengeti, especially during shoulder season.
It’s a significant investment, but virtually everyone who does it calls it the highlight of their entire safari.
3:30–4:30 AM: Early wake-up call at your lodge. Yes, it’s early — but worth it.
5:00–5:30 AM: Arrive at the launch site. Watch the crew inflate the balloon — it’s a spectacle in itself, with massive burners lighting up the pre-dawn darkness.
6:00 AM: Liftoff at first light. The balloon rises gently to 1,000–1,500 feet, offering panoramic views across the savannah. The pilot controls altitude to give you both wide-angle views and close-up passes over wildlife.
6:00–7:00 AM: The flight lasts approximately 60 minutes. You’ll drift with the wind in near-total silence — the only sounds are occasional burner blasts and the distant calls of wildlife below. Expect to see herds of wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, and if you’re lucky, predators on the hunt.
7:00–7:30 AM: Landing in the bush, followed by a champagne toast and a full breakfast cooked right there on the plains. This is one of the most surreal dining experiences you’ll ever have.
8:30–9:00 AM: Transfer back to your lodge or continue with a morning game drive.
Balloon safaris operate year-round in both the Serengeti and Mara, but the dry season (June–October) offers the best conditions: clear skies, cooler morning temperatures (10–16°C), and peak wildlife concentrations.
During the Great Migration (July–October), you might float directly over hundreds of thousands of wildebeest — an unforgettable aerial view of one of nature’s greatest spectacles.
Book early. Balloon safaris sell out fast, especially during peak season. Book 6–9 months in advance for July–October dates.
Dress warmly. Early mornings at altitude are cold. Bring a fleece or warm jacket — you can strip layers once the sun comes up.
Secure your gear. Bring a camera with a strap or secure bag. There’s limited space in the basket, and you don’t want to drop anything over the Serengeti.
Weather cancellations. High winds can ground flights. Reputable operators offer full refunds for weather cancellations, so there’s no financial risk.
Physical requirements. You need to be able to stand for about an hour and climb in and out of the basket. Most operators have a weight limit around 120–130 kg per person.
Both are spectacular, but there are differences. The Serengeti offers wider, more open plains and a stronger sense of vast wilderness. The Maasai Mara tends to have denser wildlife concentrations in a smaller area, so you may see more animals per square kilometer from the air.
