You Don’t Need £5,000 for an African Safari

The biggest myth about East African safaris is that they’re only for the wealthy. While luxury fly-in camps can cost £1,000 a night, a well-planned budget safari delivers the same wildlife — lions, elephants, gorillas, the Great Migration — for a fraction of the price. European travellers who book smart can experience East Africa for under £2,000 per person, including return flights from London.

Here’s exactly how to do it.

Choose the Right Country

Uganda is the best-value safari destination in East Africa. Park fees are lower than Kenya or Tanzania, accommodation is more affordable, and you get gorilla trekking — an experience that costs $1,500 in Rwanda but only $700 in Uganda. A 5-day Uganda safari including gorilla trekking starts at £1,200 per person (excluding flights).

Kenya offers excellent mid-range value, especially outside the Masai Mara. Parks like Tsavo, Samburu, and Lake Nakuru have lower conservancy fees and more affordable camps. A 4-day Kenya safari starts at £900 per person.

Tanzania is the most expensive for budget travellers because park fees are high (Serengeti alone is $82 per person per day). However, northern circuit camping safaris bring costs down considerably — from £1,400 per person for 5 days.

Travel in Shoulder Season

Timing is the single biggest lever for saving money:

June and November are the sweet spots. Wildlife viewing is still excellent, but lodge prices drop 20-30% compared to peak season (July-October). Fewer vehicles in the parks mean a more intimate experience.

January-February is another great window — warm, dry weather, calving season in the Serengeti, and significantly lower prices than the migration months.

April-May offers the deepest discounts (30-50% off), but expect rain. Some roads become impassable and a few camps close. Only for flexible, adventurous travellers.

Flights from Europe: How to Find Deals

Return flights from London to Entebbe (Uganda) or Nairobi (Kenya) typically cost £350-£550. To get the best fares:

Book 3-4 months ahead. Fly midweek (Tuesday-Thursday departures save £50-100). Consider Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa — often the cheapest option with good connections. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is another reliable budget option with generous baggage allowance. Direct flights with Kenya Airways or British Airways cost more but save a full day of travel.

From Amsterdam, KLM flies direct to Nairobi and Entebbe. From Paris, Brussels Airlines connects through Brussels to Entebbe. Budget European travellers should also check flights from Brussels, which often have lower airport taxes than London.

Budget-Saving Tips

Book direct with a local operator. Western agencies add 30-50% markup. Nature Nest Safaris gives you the local price because we are the local operator — no middleman.

Share a vehicle. Joining a small group (4-6 people) splits vehicle costs and brings per-person prices down significantly.

Stay outside park gates. Lodges just outside national parks charge half what in-park properties do. You’ll add 15-20 minutes of driving, but save hundreds of pounds.

Skip the internal flights. A Nairobi-Mara flight costs $250+ one way. The 5-hour drive is scenic and free (included in your safari package).

Combine countries strategically. Uganda + Rwanda makes geographic sense but doubles permit costs. Better to do one country well on a budget than rush through two.
