Wildlife You’ll See

Amboseli’s elephants are among Africa’s most studied — researchers have tracked individual family groups here since the 1970s. Beyond elephants, expect to see lions, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeest, hippos in the swamps, and over 400 bird species. The park’s open plains make wildlife spotting straightforward even for first-time safari-goers.

Top Game Drive Areas

Observation Hill offers a panoramic view of the entire park and is the best spot for photography at dawn when Kilimanjaro’s snow cap catches the first light. Enkongo Narok Swamp is where elephants gather to drink and bathe — watching a herd of 30+ elephants wade through the marshes with Kilimanjaro behind them is quintessential Amboseli.

The open plains south of the swamps are prime territory for spotting lions and cheetahs, particularly in the dry season when prey animals concentrate near water.

Entry Fees and Practicalities

Park entry costs $80 per adult per day (paid via KWS SmartCard or KWSpay). Gates open at 6:00 AM — the early morning game drive is essential, both for wildlife activity and for clear Kilimanjaro views before clouds build up. Amboseli is a 4-hour drive from Nairobi or reachable by a 45-minute charter flight.

Best Time to Visit

The dry seasons — June to October and January to February — concentrate animals around the swamps and give the clearest mountain views. The January–February window is particularly good for European visitors looking to escape winter.
