When European travellers start planning their first African safari, two names dominate every conversation: the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. Both promise extraordinary wildlife encounters, sweeping golden landscapes, and memories that last a lifetime. But which one is right for you?
Having guided hundreds of British and European visitors through both destinations, we at Nature Nest Safaris know the differences are more nuanced than most travel blogs suggest. Here’s an honest, side-by-side comparison to help you decide.
The Serengeti is vast — roughly 14,750 square kilometres of protected wilderness, nearly the size of Northern Ireland. The Masai Mara, by contrast, covers about 1,510 square kilometres. That difference matters. In the Serengeti, you can drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. The Mara is more compact, which means wildlife is concentrated and sightings come thick and fast, but you may share them with other safari-goers during peak season.
Both parks share the world-famous Great Migration — over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle circling between Tanzania and Kenya. The key difference is timing. The herds spend roughly ten months in the Serengeti (December to October), crossing rivers and calving on the southern plains. They enter the Masai Mara from July to October for the dramatic Mara River crossings that feature in every wildlife documentary.
If you’re flying from London in August or September — prime European holiday season — the Mara delivers the most dramatic river-crossing spectacles. For European travellers who can travel in January or February, the Serengeti’s calving season offers a completely different but equally magical experience, with fewer crowds and lower prices.
Outside migration season, both parks offer superb Big Five viewing. The Serengeti has a slight edge for cheetah and leopard sightings thanks to its open plains and kopje rock formations. The Mara is excellent for lion prides — the famous Marsh Pride featured in the BBC’s Big Cat Diary. Both parks offer hippo, elephant, giraffe, and a stunning variety of birdlife year-round.
Direct flights from London Heathrow to Nairobi (for the Mara) take around eight and a half hours. For the Serengeti, you’ll fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport — also roughly eight to nine hours from London, with options via Amsterdam or Istanbul. Both routes are well-served by major carriers, and connecting domestic flights to airstrips near the parks are readily available.
From a logistics standpoint, the Masai Mara is slightly easier for a short trip. You can reach the Mara from Nairobi in a five-hour drive or a 45-minute bush flight. The Serengeti requires a domestic flight from Kilimanjaro or Arusha, which adds travel time but also adds to the sense of adventure.
Park fees differ significantly. The Serengeti charges around $70 USD (approximately £55) per person per day, while the Masai Mara charges $80–$200 USD (£63–£157) depending on the season and whether you visit the national reserve or a neighbouring conservancy. Accommodation ranges from £80 per night for a comfortable tented camp to over £800 for ultra-luxury lodges in both destinations.
Overall, a five-day Masai Mara safari typically costs between £1,800 and £4,500 per person from Nairobi, while a comparable Serengeti itinerary runs £2,200 to £5,500 from Arusha. The Serengeti tends to be slightly pricier due to longer internal transfers and higher park fees for multi-day stays.
Choose the Masai Mara if: you have limited time (a long weekend extension is feasible from Nairobi), you’re visiting July to October for river crossings, or you want to combine your safari with Nairobi’s vibrant food and culture scene.
Choose the Serengeti if: you prefer vast, uncrowded wilderness, you’re interested in the calving season (January–March), or you want to combine with Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, or a Zanzibar beach extension.
Choose both: if you have ten days or more, a cross-border itinerary covering both parks is the ultimate East African safari — and it’s easier to arrange than you might think.
