1
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
A gentle walk through magnificent montane rainforest to your first hut.
Begin at Marangu Gate (1,860m) where you register and meet your team. The well-maintained trail leads through dense tropical rainforest with towering trees draped in moss and lichen. Blue monkeys swing through the canopy, and the air hums with birdsong. The gradient is gentle, and after about 4 hours you arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720m) — a cluster of cozy A-frame wooden huts nestled in the forest. A short side trip to Maundi Crater offers your first views of Kibo peak.

2
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Climb into the heath and moorland zone with expanding views of Mawenzi peak.
Leave the forest behind and enter the heather and moorland zone. Giant lobelias and groundsels line the trail as views open up dramatically. On clear days, you can see both Kibo and the jagged spires of Mawenzi peak. The trail crosses several streams before arriving at Horombo Hut (3,720m), a larger camp with multiple huts, a dining hall, and stunning sunset views. This will be your home for two nights.

3
Acclimatization Day at Horombo
Hike to Zebra Rocks for acclimatization, then return to rest at Horombo.
A vital rest and acclimatization day. After a leisurely breakfast, take a day hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000m), striking black-and-white striped rock formations created by mineral deposits. The extra altitude exposure helps your body adjust. Return to Horombo for lunch, then spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and enjoying the mountain views. Your guides will monitor your health and prepare you mentally for the days ahead.

4
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Cross the lunar alpine desert to Kibo Hut, your summit base camp.
A long, steady climb across the alpine desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape is stark and otherworldly — volcanic scree, thin air, and vast open spaces. Vegetation has almost completely disappeared. The massive dome of Kibo looms ever closer. After 5-6 hours, you arrive at Kibo Hut (4,703m), a stone building at the base of the summit cone. Eat early, rest, and try to sleep — you'll be woken around midnight.

5
Summit Night! Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo
Midnight ascent through the darkness to stand on the Roof of Africa at sunrise.
Depart at midnight by headlamp, ascending the steep scree trail in freezing temperatures. The switchbacks feel endless, but your guides encourage you with songs and steady pacing. Reach Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim as dawn paints the sky. Push on around the crater to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — you're on top of Africa! The glaciers gleam in the morning light. After photos and celebrations, descend all the way back to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.

6
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Final descent through the forest — certificates and celebrations await.
Retrace your steps through the moorland and back into the rainforest, arriving at Marangu Gate by lunchtime. Collect your official summit certificate — a gold certificate for Uhuru Peak, green for Gilman's Point. Your crew sings a farewell celebration song. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for hot showers and a celebratory dinner.
