Lake Nakuru National Park, nestled in the Great Rift Valley just 160km northwest of Nairobi, is one of Kenya’s most compact yet rewarding safari destinations. Once famous for the pink carpet of millions of flamingos along its alkaline shores, the park has evolved into one of East Africa’s most important rhino sanctuaries — making it essential for any Kenya safari itinerary.
For British travellers building a multi-day Kenya trip, Lake Nakuru is perfectly positioned between Nairobi and the Masai Mara, making it an easy two-night stopover that adds enormous variety to your safari.
Lake Nakuru is a fenced sanctuary protecting both critically endangered black rhinos and southern white rhinos. The park’s relatively small size (188 square kilometres) means sightings are frequent — you’ll often spot rhinos grazing on the lakeshore grasslands within your first game drive.
While flamingo numbers fluctuate with the lake’s water levels, Lake Nakuru still hosts impressive flocks of both lesser and greater flamingos, particularly between June and October when alkaline conditions are ideal. Over 450 bird species have been recorded here, including fish eagles, pelicans, cormorants, and Goliath herons.
Lions are regularly seen — the park’s open grasslands and scattered yellow-barked acacia woodland provide excellent viewing. Leopards favour the rocky cliffs on the eastern shore. You’ll also encounter buffalo herds, waterbuck, Rothschild’s giraffe (an endangered subspecies), baboons, and hippos.
Non-resident adults: $60 per person per 24 hours. Non-resident children: $35. East African citizens pay significantly less at KES 500. Vehicle fees are KES 300 for saloon cars. These fees are paid via the KWS smart card system — your tour operator will handle this.
The drive from Nairobi takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours via the A104 highway through Naivasha. The road is tarmac throughout and in good condition. If you’re flying, the nearest airstrip is Naishi, served by charter flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.
The dry seasons — January to March and July to October — offer the best game viewing as animals gather near the lake. Flamingo numbers are typically highest from June to October. The short rains (November) bring lush green landscapes and excellent bird photography, with fewer tourists.
Options range from budget campsites within the park to luxury lodges on the escarpment with panoramic views. Sarova Lion Hill Lodge and Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge are popular mid-range choices. For budget travellers, Backpackers Campsite offers affordable camping just outside the main gate.
A classic 7-day Kenya itinerary might include two nights at Lake Nakuru (for rhinos and flamingos), followed by three nights in the Masai Mara for the Big Five and migration. Add a night at Lake Naivasha for boat safaris and walking with giraffes at Crescent Island.
Nature Nest Safaris includes Lake Nakuru in many of our Kenya safari packages, with options from 3-day quick getaways to comprehensive 10-day Kenya tours.
