Why East Africa Is Europe’s Top Safari Destination

East Africa sits in a convenient time zone for European travellers (GMT+3, just 1–2 hours ahead of most of Europe), with direct flights from London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and Zurich to Nairobi and Kigali. A typical Kenya or Tanzania safari requires no more than 8–10 hours of flying — shorter than many long-haul holiday destinations — and the lack of significant jet lag means you can be on a game drive the morning after landing.

Kenya vs Tanzania: Which Should You Choose?

Kenya is ideal if you want the classic Masai Mara Big Five experience, Mount Kenya climbing, Amboseli’s elephants with Kilimanjaro views, or a combination safari-and-beach holiday on the Indian Ocean coast. Kenya generally offers slightly lower safari costs and more budget-friendly options.

Tanzania suits travellers drawn to the Serengeti’s vast plains, the Ngorongoro Crater (a natural amphitheatre teeming with wildlife), Kilimanjaro climbs, and island escapes to Zanzibar. Tanzania’s parks tend to be less crowded, particularly outside peak season.

Both countries offer the Great Migration — the wildebeest are in the Serengeti from December to July and cross into the Mara from July to October.

What Does an East Africa Safari Cost?

Budget roughly €150–€250 per person per day for a mid-range safari including accommodation, meals, park fees, game drives, and ground transport. A typical 7-day Kenya or Tanzania safari therefore runs €1,050–€1,750 per person before international flights. Premium and luxury options range from €300–€800+ per day.

International flights from European hubs to Nairobi or Dar es Salaam typically cost €400–€700 return when booked 3–4 months ahead. KLM via Amsterdam, Kenya Airways direct, and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul are popular routing options.

Best Months for a Safari from Europe

The dry season from June to October is peak safari season and coincides with European summer holidays. Wildlife concentrates around water sources, vegetation thins out for better visibility, and this is when the Great Migration river crossings happen in the Mara. January–February is another excellent window — warm, dry, and the calving season in the Serengeti when predator action peaks.

Practical Tips for European Travellers

Most European passport holders can get a Kenya or Tanzania e-visa online before travel (Kenya $50, Tanzania $50). Yellow fever vaccination is required if transiting through an endemic country. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential — and much cheaper to arrange from home than on arrival.

Pack light: domestic safari flights in Kenya and Tanzania have strict luggage limits (usually 15–20 kg in soft bags). Leave the hard suitcase at your Nairobi or Dar es Salaam hotel.
