Five days is the ideal length for a first Uganda safari. It’s long enough to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, spot tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and cruise the Kazinga Channel — without burning through three weeks of annual leave. European travellers flying from London, Amsterdam, or Paris can slot this itinerary into a long weekend plus two extra days off work.

Your safari begins at Entebbe International Airport, where your Nature Nest Safaris guide meets you at arrivals. The drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park takes roughly 6–7 hours through the lush Ugandan countryside, passing tea plantations, the equator crossing, and the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment.
Most European flights arrive in the morning (KLM from Amsterdam, Brussels Airlines, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul), so you’ll reach your lodge by late afternoon with time for a sundowner overlooking the savannah. Overnight at a comfortable safari lodge near the park.
Tip for British travellers: The direct Ethiopian Airlines connection via Addis Ababa often offers the best fares from Heathrow — around £450–550 return.
Wake early for a sunrise game drive through the Kasenyi Plains, one of the best spots in East Africa for lion sightings. Queen Elizabeth is famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector, though this area requires an extra day — our 5-day itinerary focuses on the northern sector where you’ll spot elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob, and warthogs.
After lunch, board a boat for the Kazinga Channel cruise. This 2-hour journey between Lake Edward and Lake George is a highlight of any Uganda safari. You’ll drift past hippo pods (sometimes 50+ animals), enormous Nile crocodiles, and a kaleidoscope of birdlife including African fish eagles, pelicans, and the rare shoebill stork.
The Kazinga Channel alone justifies the trip to Queen Elizabeth. No other safari experience in East Africa puts you this close to such dense concentrations of wildlife from the water.
After breakfast, drive south through the Ishasha sector (with a chance to spot those famous tree-climbing lions en route) to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The transfer takes 4–5 hours through some of Uganda’s most beautiful mountain scenery.
Arrive at your lodge near the gorilla trekking starting point. Your guide will brief you on tomorrow’s trek — what to wear, how to behave around the gorillas, and what to expect from the experience.
Gorilla permit note: A Uganda gorilla permit costs $800 per person in 2026 (compared to $1,500 in Rwanda). Permits sell out months in advance during peak season (June–September, December–February), so book at least 3–4 months ahead. Nature Nest Safaris handles all permit arrangements.
This is the day you’ve been waiting for. Report to the park headquarters at 7:30 AM for a briefing, then set off into the forest with your ranger guide and a small group of maximum 8 visitors.
The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight. The terrain is steep, muddy, and dense — but the moment you lock eyes with a 200-kilogram silverback from just 7 metres away, every step is worth it.
You’ll spend one hour with the gorilla family. Watch juveniles play, mothers nurse their babies, and the silverback keep a calm, watchful eye on his group. This is consistently rated as one of the top wildlife experiences on the planet, and it only happens in Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC.
After the trek, return to your lodge for a well-earned rest. Optional afternoon activity: visit the local Batwa pygmy community for a cultural experience that puts your safari in human context.
After a leisurely breakfast and a final soak in the mountain views, begin the drive back to Entebbe (7–8 hours). Alternatively, take a domestic flight from the nearby Kisoro airstrip to Entebbe (1 hour, from $180 one way) to save time.
Most evening flights depart Entebbe after 10 PM, so you’ll have time for a lakeside lunch in Entebbe before heading to the airport. If your flight leaves the next morning, overnight at a comfortable Entebbe hotel and enjoy a final evening on the shores of Lake Victoria.

Uganda sits on the equator, so wildlife viewing is excellent year-round. However, the dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the most comfortable trekking conditions with drier trails and clearer skies.
The shoulder months (March, October, November) offer lower prices and fewer crowds, though trails can be muddier. Gorilla trekking operates every day of the year regardless of weather.
