1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Trek through ancient rainforest alive with birdsong and colobus monkeys.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Machame Gate (1,800m). After registration and a team briefing, you enter the lush montane rainforest. The trail winds upward through a canopy of giant heathers, mosses, and ferns. Watch for blue monkeys and exotic birds overhead. The air is thick with moisture and the earthy scent of the forest floor. After 5-6 hours of trekking, you arrive at Machame Camp perched at 3,000m on a ridge with views down into the forest below.

2
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Emerge from the forest into open moorland with sweeping views of Shira Plateau.
Leave the rainforest behind as you ascend into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation transitions to giant heathers, lobelias, and groundsels — alien-looking plants unique to East African mountains. The trail steepens as you cross rocky ridges with increasingly dramatic views. By afternoon you reach the edge of the Shira Plateau (3,840m), one of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones. Sunset here is spectacular, with the plains of Tanzania stretching to the horizon.

3
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Critical acclimatization day — climb high to Lava Tower, sleep low at Barranco.
Today is the key to summit success. You trek across the Shira Plateau and ascend steadily to Lava Tower (4,630m), a massive volcanic rock formation. This is your first taste of serious altitude. After lunch at Lava Tower, you descend 670m through the spectacular Barranco Valley to camp. This 'climb high, sleep low' strategy is crucial for acclimatization. You may notice the landscape shifting to alpine desert — sparse vegetation, volcanic rock, and thin air.
Barranco Camp (3,960m)
4
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Scramble up the legendary Barranco Wall, then traverse to Karanga Valley.
The morning starts with the famous Barranco Wall — a 257m near-vertical rock face that looks intimidating but is actually a thrilling, non-technical scramble. Your guides lead you up hand-over-hand routes with stunning exposure and views. At the top, you're rewarded with a panoramic view of the Southern Icefields. The trail then undulates across ridges and valleys before dropping into Karanga Valley, the last water point before the summit push.
Karanga Camp (3,995m)
5
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Short but steep ascent to base camp. Rest and prepare for summit night.
A shorter day designed for rest before the summit attempt. You ascend through increasingly barren alpine desert terrain to Barafu Camp (4,673m), your summit base camp. The name means 'ice' in Swahili. Arrive by early afternoon, eat a hearty meal, and try to sleep. Your guides will brief you on the midnight departure. The stars above Barafu are extraordinary — you're above most of the atmosphere.

6
Summit Night! Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
The ultimate challenge — midnight ascent to the Roof of Africa at sunrise.
Wake at midnight for the final push. Headlamps illuminate the scree trail as you climb in the freezing darkness. The pace is deliberately slow — pole pole. After 6-7 hours, you reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim as dawn breaks. The sunrise over Africa is indescribable — golden light flooding across the clouds below. A 45-minute traverse along the crater rim brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate, take photos, then begin the long descent to Mweka Camp via Barafu.
Mweka Camp (3,100m)
7
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Celebrate your achievement as you descend through rainforest to the gate.
The final descent takes you back through the rainforest zone, now seen with new eyes after your summit success. The trail is muddy and steep in places, but your legs carry you with the lightness of accomplishment. At Mweka Gate (1,640m), your guides and porters sing a celebration song and you receive your official summit certificate. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and a well-earned celebration dinner.
