Floating silently over the Serengeti at dawn, watching the savannah wake up beneath you — a hot air balloon safari is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that travellers from London, Paris, and Amsterdam consistently rank as the highlight of their East Africa trip. The Serengeti balloon safari has become one of Tanzania’s most sought-after experiences, and for good reason.
From above, the scale of the Serengeti becomes real. Herds of wildebeest stretch to the horizon. Hippos wade in the Grumeti River. Lions rest in the golden grass below. It is a perspective that no game drive can match, and it lasts roughly 60 minutes of pure, wind-carried silence.
A standard Serengeti balloon safari costs between $499 and $599 per person in 2026, depending on the season and operator. This typically includes a pre-dawn transfer from your lodge, the one-hour flight itself, a champagne bush breakfast after landing, and a short game drive back to your accommodation.
For European travellers, that works out to roughly £400–£480 or €470–€560 — a significant add-on to your safari budget, but one that delivers a genuinely unique experience. Children under 7 are generally not permitted, and most operators set a minimum age of 8 with a weight limit of around 120 kg.
Balloon safaris operate year-round in the central Serengeti (Seronera area), but the experience varies dramatically by season. June to October is dry season — clear skies, excellent visibility, and the best chance of spotting large predator kills from the air. This is also when the wildebeest migration passes through the northern Serengeti and western corridor.
The green season (November to March) offers lower prices, fewer tourists in the basket, and the calving season in the southern Serengeti around February. The grass is lush and the light is extraordinary for photography, though morning mist can occasionally delay launches.
Your day starts early — a 4:30 AM wake-up call at your lodge, followed by a short drive to the launch site. The balloon is already being inflated when you arrive, its burners roaring against the pre-dawn darkness. You climb into the basket (which holds 12–16 passengers) lying on your side, and as the balloon lifts, you stand upright.
The pilot controls altitude by heating the air inside the envelope, and you drift wherever the wind takes you — typically covering 10–15 km during the flight. The silence between burner blasts is extraordinary. Animals below barely notice you, going about their morning routines as you float overhead.
After landing (a gentle bump-and-drag across the grass), your crew sets up a bush breakfast complete with champagne, scrambled eggs, sausages, and fresh fruit — right there in the middle of the Serengeti.
Balloon safaris sell out quickly during peak season (July–September), so we recommend booking at least 2–3 months in advance. Nature Nest Safaris can arrange your balloon flight as part of a complete Tanzania safari package, ensuring the logistics — lodge transfers, timing with your itinerary — are handled seamlessly.
We work with the most experienced balloon operators in the Serengeti and can often secure better rates than booking directly, especially when combined with a multi-day safari package.
Dress in warm layers — it is surprisingly cold at altitude before sunrise, even in Tanzania. Bring a camera with a good zoom lens but leave the tripod behind; the basket rim works perfectly as a stabiliser. Wear closed-toe shoes (the landing can be bumpy) and bring sunglasses for once the sun comes up.
Most importantly, put the camera down for at least a few minutes and simply look. The Serengeti from above is something no photograph fully captures.
