The Safari After Sunset

Most safari visitors pack up after the afternoon game drive and head back to camp as the sun sets. But some of East Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters happen after dark. Night game drives open a window into a completely different ecosystem — one ruled by nocturnal hunters, elusive creatures, and behaviours you’ll never witness in daylight.

What You’ll See on a Night Drive

Using a handheld spotlight or vehicle-mounted LED, your guide sweeps the bush to catch the reflective eyes of animals active after dark. The species list on a typical night drive is dramatically different from a daytime outing.

Leopards are far more active at night, and your chances of watching a leopard hunt increase significantly after sunset. Spotted hyenas emerge from their dens to patrol territorial boundaries and scavenge — their haunting calls are one of the defining sounds of the African night. Aardvarks, pangolins, honey badgers, genets, civets, and bush babies are almost exclusively nocturnal and nearly impossible to see during the day.

Lions also hunt at night more than most people realise. Buffalo herds move to water under cover of darkness, and predators know it. Witnessing a lion pride coordinating a night-time hunt is a raw, unforgettable experience that few safari-goers ever see.

Where to Do Night Drives in Kenya

Night drives are not permitted inside Kenya’s national reserves (including the Masai Mara National Reserve). However, the private conservancies bordering the Mara — Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, Mara North, and Ol Kinyei — all allow night game drives as part of their exclusive, low-impact safari model. These conservancies offer the same wildlife as the main reserve with far fewer vehicles.

Laikipia Plateau, Samburu, and the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy also offer excellent night drive opportunities, often combined with walking safaris for a truly immersive experience.

Night Drives in Tanzania

Tanzania’s national parks generally don’t allow night drives. The exception is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and select concessions within the Serengeti. Some luxury camps in the Serengeti operate in private concession areas where night drives are permitted — ask your operator before booking if this is important to you.

The Lake Manyara area and some properties near Tarangire also offer night game drives on their private land.

Night Drives in Uganda

Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Kasenyi sector and the Ishasha sector (famous for tree-climbing lions) both permit night drives. Uganda’s night drives often produce sightings of leopards, hippos on land, elephant herds, and the occasional giant forest hog — one of Africa’s rarest large mammals.

Tips for Night Safari Success

Dress warmly — temperatures drop sharply after sunset, especially in highland areas. Bring a dark-coloured fleece or jacket (bright colours can startle animals in the spotlight). Keep your camera’s ISO high and use a fast lens if possible — flash photography is not allowed as it disturbs wildlife. Stay quiet in the vehicle; many nocturnal animals have acute hearing and will vanish at the sound of conversation.

A good guide makes all the difference on a night drive. Experienced guides can identify animals by the colour and spacing of their eye reflections alone — green for cats, orange-red for herbivores, bright white for spiders (yes, thousands of tiny eyes glitter in the spotlight).
