Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and going on a Tanzanian safari are two of Africa’s greatest adventures — and they’re only a few hours apart. Combining both into a single trip saves you a return flight, gives you the ultimate bragging rights, and lets you experience Tanzania from its highest peak to its wildest plains.

A well-paced combined trip takes 10–14 days. Here’s the breakdown:
Kilimanjaro climb: 6–8 days depending on your route. The Machame and Lemosho routes (6–7 days) offer better acclimatization and higher summit success rates than the shorter Marangu route (5 days).
Rest day: 1 day in Moshi or Arusha to recover, shower, do laundry, and transition mentally from mountaineer to safari-goer.
Safari: 3–5 days on Tanzania’s Northern Circuit. Even 3 days gives you a solid taste of Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti.
Climb first, safari second — this is what most experienced operators recommend, and we agree. After days of physical exertion at altitude, relaxing in a safari vehicle watching wildlife is the perfect recovery. You’ll appreciate the comfort of a lodge much more after sleeping in mountain tents.
Starting with the safari risks fatigue and a disrupted sleep schedule right before your climb, when you need to be at your physical best.
Machame Route (6–7 days): The most popular route for combo trips. Good acclimatization profile, dramatic scenery through five distinct climate zones, and a 85%+ summit success rate on the 7-day version. Known as the “Whiskey Route” for its steeper terrain.
Lemosho Route (7–8 days): Our top recommendation. Fewer crowds on the first two days, the best scenery of any route, and the highest success rates (90%+). It approaches from the west, offering views most climbers never see.
Marangu Route (5 days): The only route with hut accommodation instead of tents. Shortest duration, but lower success rates (65%) due to less acclimatization time. Best for those with very limited time.
Tanzania’s Northern Circuit is the natural pairing with Kilimanjaro — all parks are within driving distance of Moshi/Arusha.
Tarangire National Park: Famous for its massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. A great first safari stop — less crowded than the Serengeti and only 2 hours from Arusha.
Ngorongoro Crater: A collapsed volcanic caldera containing the Big Five in a single 260 km² area. Nowhere else in Africa offers this concentration of wildlife in such a dramatic setting.
Serengeti National Park: The crown jewel. Endless plains, the Great Migration, and some of the best big cat sightings in the world. Allow at least 2 full days here if possible.
Kilimanjaro climb: $2,000–$3,500 per person for a 7-day Machame or Lemosho route, including park fees, guides, porters, meals, and equipment.
Northern Circuit safari (3–4 days): $1,500–$2,500 per person for a mid-range experience with comfortable lodges and private game drives.
Total combined trip: $4,000–$6,500 per person, not including international flights. This is exceptional value for two world-class experiences in a single trip.
Start training 8–12 weeks before. Focus on cardio (hiking, running, cycling) and leg strength. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable hiking 5–7 hours per day with a light daypack.
Altitude is the real challenge, not fitness. Even very fit climbers can get altitude sickness. Choose a longer route (7+ days) for better acclimatization, stay hydrated (3–4 liters per day), and follow the “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) mantra.
Pack light but smart. Your porters carry most of your gear on Kilimanjaro. Key items: layered clothing, waterproof jacket, warm summit gear (-15°C at the top), headlamp, and trekking poles.
The sweet spots are January–March and June–October. These are Kilimanjaro’s dry seasons and also the best months for safari wildlife viewing. June–October has the added bonus of overlapping with the Great Migration in the Serengeti.
