London is one of the best-connected European cities for East African travel:
Kenya Airways flies direct from London Heathrow to Nairobi (8.5 hours). This is the fastest route into East Africa — you can leave London in the evening and wake up on safari the next morning. Return fares from £450–£700.
RwandAir flies direct from London Gatwick to Kigali (8 hours). Ideal if you’re heading to Rwanda for gorilla trekking or combining Rwanda with Uganda. Fares from £500–£800.
KLM via Amsterdam connects to Nairobi, Entebbe, and Kilimanjaro. Often the cheapest option — return fares from £400–£600, and Amsterdam Schiphol is an easy connection.
Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa connects to virtually every East African destination. Budget-friendly at £380–£550 return, though the Addis connection adds 3–4 hours.
Turkish Airlines via Istanbul connects to Nairobi and Kilimanjaro. Competitive pricing from £420–£650.
For travellers outside London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh all have connections via Amsterdam, Istanbul, or Addis Ababa.
Kenya: eVisa required ($51 / ~£40). Apply at evisa.go.ke at least 72 hours before travel.
Uganda: eVisa required ($50 / ~£40). Apply at visas.immigration.go.ug. Allow 3–5 business days.
Tanzania: eVisa required ($50 / ~£40). Apply at visa.immigration.go.tz.
Rwanda: British citizens get visa on arrival for free (30-day stay).

East Africa offers extraordinary value for British travellers. Here’s what to budget per person per day:
Budget safaris: £120–£200/day. Basic lodges and tented camps, shared vehicles. Genuine safari experience without the luxury price tag.
Mid-range safaris: £200–£350/day. Comfortable lodges and permanent tented camps, private vehicle and guide, most meals included. The sweet spot for most British clients.
Luxury safaris: £350–£800+/day. Premium lodges, private conservancies, all-inclusive. Think Angama Mara, Singita, or Volcanoes Safaris.
A typical 7-day mid-range Kenya or Tanzania safari runs £2,000–£2,800 per person sharing. Add gorilla trekking in Uganda and budget £3,200–£4,500 for 10 days. These prices include accommodation, meals, park fees, transport, and a professional guide — not international flights.
Compare that to Southern Africa: a comparable Botswana or Zimbabwe safari typically costs £4,000–£7,000 for 7 days. East Africa is genuinely half the price with equally spectacular wildlife.
June to September — The best wildlife viewing period. Dry season means animals gather at water sources, the Great Migration crosses the Mara River, and UK school holidays overlap perfectly. Book 4–6 months ahead.
October half-term — The short rains begin but it’s still excellent for safari. Lower prices and fewer crowds than summer.
Christmas and New Year — Peak season for British travellers. Calving season starts in the southern Serengeti, weather is warm and dry in most areas. Book by September for Christmas availability.
February half-term — Calving season in the Serengeti is spectacular. Dry season in Uganda for gorilla trekking. A brilliant time to escape the British winter.
Easter holidays — Shoulder season with lower prices. April can be wet in some areas, but Uganda’s gorilla trekking runs year-round.

Travel insurance: Essential — get a policy that covers emergency medical evacuation. Check that safari activities and altitudes (if doing Kilimanjaro) are included. Companies like World Nomads and True Traveller specialise in adventure travel.
Health: Yellow fever vaccination is required for Uganda. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all East African safari areas — your GP or a travel clinic can prescribe Malarone or doxycycline. Book an appointment 6–8 weeks before departure.
Currency: US dollars are widely accepted and often preferred for tourist payments. Bring clean, post-2006 bills. Your safari operator (that’s us) will quote in USD, and you can pay by bank transfer from your UK account.
Luggage: If taking domestic flights to safari lodges, soft-sided bags under 15kg are required — no hard suitcases. Pack light layers, neutral colours, and a decent camera.
Time zone: East Africa is GMT+3 — only 2–3 hours ahead of the UK depending on BST/GMT. No jet lag, which is a massive advantage over Southern or West African destinations.
