Everyone talks about gorilla trekking in Uganda — and rightly so. But there’s another great ape encounter that most first-time visitors overlook, and it’s arguably just as thrilling: chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park.
Kibale is home to roughly 1,500 chimpanzees — the highest density of chimps anywhere in Africa. A trekking permit costs just $200 per person (compared to $800 for gorillas), and the experience of watching a chimp family swing through the canopy, crack open nuts, and scream at rival groups is raw, loud, and completely unforgettable.
Treks start at 8am from the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre inside Kibale Forest. Your group (maximum 6 people) sets out with an armed ranger and a tracker who’s been following the chimps since dawn.
The forest is dense tropical rainforest — think towering mahogany trees, hanging vines, and a canopy so thick the light filters through green. The trek itself can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on where the chimps have moved overnight.
When you find them, you get one hour. Unlike gorillas, who tend to sit calmly and observe you, chimps are chaotic. They chase each other through the trees, groom in pairs, drum on buttress roots to communicate with distant groups, and occasionally erupt into screaming displays that shake the forest. It’s nature at its most raw and theatrical.
Kibale isn’t just chimps, either. The forest is home to 13 primate species in total — more than any other forest in Africa. On a single trek you might see red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, olive baboons, and blue monkeys. It’s a primate paradise.
If the standard one-hour trek isn’t enough, Kibale offers the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) — a full-day immersion where you join researchers working to habituate a wild chimp community to human presence. You follow the chimps from when they wake in their nests at dawn until they build new nests at dusk.
CHEX permits cost $250 per person and only 4 are issued per day, so booking early is essential. It’s one of the most intimate wildlife experiences available anywhere in the world.
The smartest Uganda safari itinerary combines chimpanzee trekking in Kibale with gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The two parks are about 5-6 hours apart by road, connected by one of Uganda’s most scenic drives through the Albertine Rift.
Here’s a sample 6-day itinerary that covers both:
Day 1: Arrive Entebbe, transfer to Fort Portal area (near Kibale).
Day 2: Morning chimpanzee trek in Kibale Forest. Afternoon crater lake walk.
Day 3: Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Afternoon Kazinga Channel boat safari.
Day 4: Morning game drive (lions, elephants, leopards). Drive to Bwindi via Ishasha (tree-climbing lions).
Day 5: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
Day 6: Morning at Lake Bunyonyi, then transfer to Entebbe for your flight.
Cost: From $3,400 per person including both the chimp permit ($200) and gorilla permit ($800), all accommodation, meals, transport in a private 4×4 with driver-guide, and park entry fees.
Permit cost: $200 per person for standard chimpanzee trekking, $250 for the Habituation Experience.
Permits per day: 24 for standard trekking (4 groups of 6), 4 for CHEX.
Best time: June–September and December–February (dry seasons, easier trails).
Fitness level: Moderate. The forest trails are uneven and can be muddy, but it’s generally easier than gorilla trekking in Bwindi.
What to wear: Long trousers, waterproof hiking boots, a long-sleeved shirt, and gardening gloves for grabbing vines. The forest is humid — dress in layers you can strip off.
Minimum age: 12 years for standard trekking, 15 for CHEX.
Gorilla trekking gets all the headlines, so most travellers — especially those on tight schedules — skip Kibale to save a day. That’s a mistake. Adding Kibale to your itinerary costs just one extra day and $200, and it gives you a completely different primate experience. Gorillas are calm and contemplative. Chimps are wild and unpredictable. Together, they give you the full picture of Uganda’s extraordinary primate heritage.
