Most British travellers who book a Kenya safari head straight for the Masai Mara. It is famous for good reason, but it is also busy. Five hours north of Nairobi, in a sun-baked landscape of red earth, doum palms and acacia, sits a reserve that feels like a different country altogether: Samburu National Reserve. If you are planning a Kenya safari from London or elsewhere in Europe in 2026, here is why Samburu deserves a place on your itinerary.
Samburu lies in Kenya’s semi-arid north, straddling the Ewaso Ng’iro River. That river is the lifeline of the whole reserve. In the dry months, elephants, buffalo and big cats are drawn to its banks, which means game viewing is concentrated and predictable. The reserve itself is compact at around 165 square kilometres, and it sits alongside Buffalo Springs and Shaba reserves, so you can cover a surprising variety of habitat in two or three days.
Vehicle numbers are far lower than in the Mara. It is common to watch a leopard or a lion pride for half an hour without another car in sight — something that is increasingly rare on Kenya’s southern circuit.
Northern Kenya is home to five species you will not find in the Mara or Serengeti. Guides call them the Samburu Special Five:
For repeat safari-goers from the UK and Europe who have already “done” the Big Five, ticking off the Special Five is a genuine highlight.
Samburu is well known for its elephant families, which cross and bathe in the Ewaso Ng’iro most afternoons. Leopard sightings are frequent along the riverine forest, and lions, cheetahs and wild dogs are all present. Birders will find more than 450 recorded species.
The reserve is also the homeland of the Samburu people, semi-nomadic pastoralists closely related to the Maasai. A respectful community visit — arranged through a lodge or local conservancy — is a meaningful way to understand how people and wildlife share this landscape.
Direct flights from London Heathrow to Nairobi take roughly eight and a half hours, with daily services available. Travellers from Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Frankfurt can connect via Europe’s main hubs or the Gulf. From Nairobi you have two options:
UK and EU passport holders should apply online for Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorisation before departure.
The driest months — late June to October and mid-December to March — give the best game viewing, as animals gather at the river. The short rains in November and the long rains from April to May bring green landscapes, fewer visitors and lower lodge rates. Samburu is hot year-round, so pack light, breathable clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
As a guide for 2026, British and European travellers can expect:
A three-night Samburu extension typically adds around £900–£1,500 per person to a Kenya itinerary, depending on accommodation and whether you fly or drive.
A classic 8–10 day route for UK travellers runs Nairobi → Samburu (3 nights) → Ol Pejeta (2 nights) → Lake Nakuru or Naivasha (1 night) → Masai Mara (3 nights). This gives you the Special Five, rhinos and chimps at Ol Pejeta, Rift Valley lakes and the big cats of the Mara — a far richer trip than the Mara alone.
Samburu rewards travellers who want something wilder, quieter and more distinctive. Our local team can build a tailored Kenya itinerary around your dates, budget and flights from the UK or Europe.
