The Two Places on Earth Where You Can Trek Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas live in only two places: the Virunga volcanic range straddling Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC, and Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. For European travellers, the practical choice comes down to Uganda or Rwanda — both offer extraordinary encounters with habituated gorilla families, but the cost, logistics, and overall experience differ significantly.

Gorilla Permit Prices 2026

This is the single biggest factor for most travellers:

Uganda gorilla permit: $800 per person (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park). Rwanda gorilla permit: $1,500 per person (Volcanoes National Park).

That’s a $700 difference per person — £560 saved in Uganda. For a couple, you’re saving over £1,100 before you’ve even booked flights or accommodation.

Both permits include one hour with a habituated gorilla family, park entry, and ranger guides. The gorilla experience itself is remarkably similar — these are the same species, the same volcanic forest habitat, and families of similar size (typically 8–25 members).

Getting There From the UK

Uganda (Bwindi): Fly London to Entebbe (direct on several airlines, ~9 hours). Then either a domestic flight to Kihihi airstrip (1 hour) or a scenic 8-hour drive through western Uganda. Most travellers combine gorilla trekking with Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls.

Rwanda (Volcanoes NP): Fly London to Kigali (via Addis Ababa or Nairobi, ~10-12 hours). Volcanoes National Park is a 2.5-hour drive from Kigali — logistically very easy. Rwanda works well for shorter trips or as a standalone gorilla trek.

The Trekking Experience

Both countries use a similar format: you arrive at the park headquarters at 7am, receive a briefing, get assigned a gorilla family, and set off with rangers and trackers. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day.

Bwindi (Uganda) tends to have steeper, denser forest — the “impenetrable” name is accurate. Treks can be more physically demanding, but the forest itself is hauntingly beautiful. Uganda has more habituated families (over 20), so permit availability is generally better.

Volcanoes NP (Rwanda) has bamboo forest at higher altitude — somewhat more open terrain. Rwanda has invested heavily in tourism infrastructure, so roads and lodges around the park are excellent. Fewer habituated families means permits can book out 3–6 months ahead.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Uganda if: Budget matters (you save $700+ per person), you want a longer safari combining gorillas with other parks, you want more permit flexibility, or you’re after a rawer, more adventurous experience.

Choose Rwanda if: You have limited time (gorillas are 2.5 hours from the international airport), you want the most polished infrastructure, or you’re combining with a luxury beach extension in Zanzibar.

Our recommendation for European travellers: Uganda. The permit savings alone cover 2–3 extra nights of safari. Most of our clients do a 7–10 day Uganda trip combining Bwindi gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth NP, and Murchison Falls — all for less than a gorilla-only trip to Rwanda.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a gorilla permit in Uganda vs Rwanda?

Uganda: $800 per person. Rwanda: $1,500 per person. That’s a $700 saving per person in Uganda (£560). Both permits include one hour with a habituated gorilla family, park entry, and ranger guides.

Is gorilla trekking safe?

Yes. Habituated gorilla families are accustomed to human visitors. You’re accompanied by armed rangers and experienced trackers. Strict rules (7m distance, no flash, masks required) protect both visitors and gorillas. Hundreds of thousands of tourists have trekked safely.

How fit do you need to be for gorilla trekking?

Moderate fitness is recommended. Treks range from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on gorilla location. Bwindi (Uganda) has steeper terrain than Volcanoes NP (Rwanda). Porters are available for hire and strongly recommended — they carry your bag and help on steep sections.

When is the best time for gorilla trekking?

The dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the easiest trekking conditions. However, gorilla trekking operates year-round. Wet season (March-May, October-November) means muddier trails but fewer tourists and sometimes better permit availability.

Should I choose Uganda or Rwanda for gorilla trekking?

Choose Uganda if budget matters ($700 saved per person), you want a longer multi-park safari, or you prefer a rawer adventure. Choose Rwanda if you have limited time (gorillas are 2.5 hours from Kigali airport), want polished infrastructure, or are combining with a beach extension.
