Tanzania’s Best-Kept Coastal Secret

While most visitors to Tanzania head straight for Zanzibar, the historic town of Bagamoyo offers something entirely different: uncrowded golden beaches, centuries of layered history, and a living arts scene — all just 75 kilometres north of Dar es Salaam. For European travellers combining a Serengeti safari with a beach break, Bagamoyo is a compelling and much quieter alternative to the Zanzibar tourist trail.

A Town Steeped in History

Bagamoyo was one of the most important trading ports on the East African coast in the 19th century. Its name translates roughly as “lay down your heart” — a reference to the enslaved people who passed through here on the final leg of the caravan route from Lake Tanganyika before being shipped to Zanzibar.

The town later became a base for European explorers — Burton, Speke, and Stanley all departed from or arrived in Bagamoyo — and in 1868, the Holy Ghost Fathers established East Africa’s first Catholic mission here. Today, the mission church and museum are well-preserved and open to visitors.

What to See and Do

Kaole Ruins: Just south of town, these 13th-century ruins include mosques and tombs from Bagamoyo’s earliest Islamic settlement. One of the oldest archaeological sites on the East African coast.

The Old Fort: Built by Omani Arabs in the 18th century, the fort later served as a German colonial administrative centre. It’s atmospheric and free to explore.

TaSUBa College of Arts: Tanzania’s national arts college hosts live drumming, dance performances, and workshops. Visiting a rehearsal is one of the most memorable cultural experiences on the Tanzanian coast.

Dhow Sailing: Traditional wooden dhow boats offer sunset cruises, fishing trips, and excursions to nearby sandbanks for snorkelling in clear Indian Ocean waters.

The Beach: Bagamoyo’s beach is long, sandy, and blissfully quiet. Unlike Zanzibar’s busy stretches, you’ll often have it largely to yourself.

Getting There

From Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo is about 1.5 hours by road. It works perfectly as a 2–3 day add-on after a northern circuit safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) before flying home from Dar.
