Short on Time? You Can Still Trek Gorillas in Uganda

Not everyone has two weeks for a grand East African safari — and you don’t need them. A focused 3-day Uganda safari built around gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the most rewarding short wildlife trips anywhere in the world. You’ll arrive in Uganda, trek with mountain gorillas, and be home within a long weekend.

This itinerary is especially popular with European travellers who can fly into Entebbe on Thursday evening and be back at work on Monday, and with American visitors adding a gorilla extension to a longer East African itinerary.

Day 1: Arrive Entebbe — Fly to Bwindi

Morning: Arrive at Entebbe International Airport. If you’re on an overnight flight from London (direct BA or connecting via Nairobi/Addis), you’ll land around 7-8 AM. Clear immigration, collect your yellow fever certificate check, and meet your Nature Nest Safaris guide at the arrivals hall.

Mid-morning: Transfer to the domestic terminal for your charter flight to Kihihi Airstrip (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes). This internal flight is the key to making a 3-day trip work — the drive from Entebbe to Bwindi takes 8-10 hours, but flying gets you there before lunch.

Afternoon: Arrive at your lodge near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Settle in, have lunch, and attend the gorilla trekking briefing — your guide will explain tomorrow’s protocol, what to expect, and answer any questions. Rest and acclimatise to the altitude (around 2,000 metres).

Evening: Early dinner at the lodge. Tomorrow’s call time is early, so aim for an early night. The forest sounds at night are extraordinary — tree hyrax screams, insect choruses, and the occasional distant chimpanzee hoot.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking — The Main Event

6:00 AM: Wake up, breakfast at the lodge.

7:30 AM: Report to the Uganda Wildlife Authority park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing. You’ll be assigned to a gorilla family group and a ranger team. Groups are limited to 8 visitors per gorilla family per day — this is an exclusive, intimate experience.

8:00 AM – 1:00 PM: The trek itself. Duration varies enormously — from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day. The rangers track the gorillas’ movements from the previous evening’s nesting site and lead you to them through dense forest. When you find your gorilla family, you’ll spend one magical hour observing silverbacks, mothers with babies, juveniles playing, and the complex social dynamics of a mountain gorilla group. This is the moment that every safari traveller describes as life-changing.

Afternoon: Return to the lodge for a late lunch and well-earned rest. Optional: visit the Batwa pygmy community for a cultural experience, or take a short guided forest walk to spot birds and primates. Bwindi has over 350 bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.

Evening: Celebratory dinner at the lodge. Swap gorilla stories with fellow trekkers — everyone has a different experience, and the shared excitement is infectious.

Day 3: Depart Bwindi — Fly Home

Morning: Leisurely breakfast and a final walk around the lodge grounds. Many lodges sit on the forest edge, and you might spot colobus monkeys, hornbills, or chameleons without even leaving the property.

Late morning: Transfer to Kihihi Airstrip for your return flight to Entebbe (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes).

Afternoon: Arrive Entebbe. Depending on your international flight time, you can visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (the old Entebbe Zoo, excellent for close-up wildlife encounters), explore the Botanical Gardens on the shores of Lake Victoria, or simply relax at a lakeside restaurant before heading to the airport.

Evening: Connect to your international flight home. Most European-bound flights depart Entebbe late evening, arriving in London, Amsterdam, or Brussels the following morning.

What Does This 3-Day Safari Cost?

A 3-day gorilla trekking safari from Entebbe starts from approximately $1,800 per person sharing, which includes:

Your gorilla trekking permit ($800 per person — set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority), two nights’ accommodation at a mid-range lodge near Bwindi, all meals, return internal flights (Entebbe-Kihihi-Entebbe), all ground transfers in a 4WD safari vehicle, an English-speaking guide, and park entrance fees.

Luxury lodge options (Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge) increase the price to $2,800-3,500 per person. Budget options using community guesthouses can bring it down to around $1,400 per person, though the internal flights remain the fixed cost.

Can You Extend This Trip?

Absolutely. The most popular extensions include adding a second gorilla trek (different family group — highly recommended if budget allows), a day in Queen Elizabeth National Park for Big Five game drives and a Kazinga Channel boat safari, or chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest. A 5-day version covering gorillas plus Queen Elizabeth is our most popular Uganda safari package.

Book Your 3-Day Gorilla Safari

Gorilla permits sell out months in advance, particularly for the June-September and December-February peak seasons. We recommend booking at least 3-4 months ahead to secure your preferred dates.
