1
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Begin on the western slopes through pristine montane rainforest.
Transfer to Londorossi Gate and drive to the Lemosho trailhead. Trek through pristine, undisturbed montane rainforest on the quiet western approach. Giant camphor and podocarpus trees tower overhead, with black and white colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa ('Big Tree') Camp (2,780m) after a gentle 3-4 hour walk.
Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,780m)
2
Mti Mkubwa to Shira 2 Camp
Climb onto the vast Shira Plateau with views of Kibo and Mount Meru.
Ascend through the heather zone onto the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's collapsed volcanic cones. The open moorland stretches endlessly, with views of Mount Meru to the west and the Kibo summit cone to the east. Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) sits in a commanding position on the plateau edge.

3
Shira 2 to Moir Hut
Head north into quiet, unvisited terrain toward Moir Hut.
This is where the Northern Circuit diverges from all other routes. Instead of heading east to Lava Tower, you turn north into rarely visited terrain. The landscape is stark and beautiful — volcanic formations, scattered groundsels, and expansive views. Moir Hut (4,200m) sits in splendid isolation with virtually no other trekkers around. Optional acclimatization hike to the Lent Hills.
Moir Hut (4,200m)
4
Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp via Northern Traverse
Traverse the quiet northern slopes with views few trekkers ever see.
Begin the northern traverse — the unique section that defines this route. The trail contours around the northern slopes of Kibo, passing through landscapes that feel like another planet. Volcanic rock formations, sparse alpine desert vegetation, and sweeping views of the Kenyan plains to the north. You may not see another trekker all day. Buffalo Camp (4,020m) is named for the occasional Cape buffalo that wander this high.
Buffalo Camp (4,020m)
5
Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp
Continue the northern traverse with 360-degree mountain panoramas.
Continue eastward along the northern slopes. The terrain is dramatic — volcanic ridges, ancient lava flows, and the constant presence of Kibo's summit above. Third Cave Camp (3,870m) sits near a volcanic cave used by early Kilimanjaro explorers. Sunset here is extraordinary, with views stretching across the northern plains.
Third Cave Camp (3,870m)
6
Third Cave to School Hut
Ascend to high camp at School Hut — your summit launch point.
A significant altitude gain today as you climb from the northern slopes to School Hut (4,750m), the highest camp on this route. The landscape is barren alpine desert — nothing grows here. The thin air and stark beauty create a powerful atmosphere. You're above the clouds, looking down on the world.
School Hut (4,750m)
7
Rest Day at School Hut
Rest and acclimatize at high camp — the key to your summit success.
An extra rest day at altitude that makes the Northern Circuit's success rate the highest of any route. Take short walks, hydrate constantly, eat well, and let your body adapt. Your guides brief you on the summit push — departure time, clothing layers, emergency protocols. Watch the sunset from 4,750m — one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the mountain.
School Hut (4,750m)
8
Summit Night! School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp
Midnight ascent to the Roof of Africa — the reward for your 9-day journey.
Depart at midnight for the summit. The route from School Hut approaches the crater rim from the east, a slightly different angle than the southern routes. After 5-6 hours of steady climbing, reach Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. Continue around to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) as the sun rises over Africa. Having spent 9 days acclimatizing, you'll feel stronger than trekkers on shorter routes. Descend to Millennium Camp (3,820m) for your final night.

9
Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate
Final descent through the rainforest — collect your summit certificate.
Descend through the lower alpine zone and back into the lush rainforest. The contrast between the barren summit zone and the green forest below is striking. Arrive at Mweka Gate (1,640m) by early afternoon. Collect your summit certificate, celebrate with your crew, and transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned rest.

Testimonials

What Our Travelers Say

“The Northern Circuit was worth every extra day. While other groups were struggling on summit night, our 9 days of acclimatization meant we felt strong all the way to Uhuru Peak. The northern traverse was incredibly remote — we didn't see another soul for two full days.”

“Choosing the Northern Circuit was the best decision we made. The rest day at School Hut made all the difference on summit night. Our Nature Nest guides were exceptional — professional, encouraging, and genuinely passionate about the mountain.”
