1
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Drive to Londorossi Gate, then trek through pristine rainforest to Big Tree Camp.
Transfer to Londorossi Gate on the remote western side of Kilimanjaro. After registration, a short drive brings you to the Lemosho trailhead. The path winds through pristine montane rainforest — this is some of the least-disturbed forest on the mountain. Giant camphor trees and ferns tower overhead. Black and white colobus monkeys are frequently spotted. After 3-4 hours, arrive at Mti Mkubwa ('Big Tree') Camp (2,780m), named for the enormous specimen nearby.
Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,780m)
2
Mti Mkubwa to Shira 2 Camp
Emerge from the forest onto the spectacular Shira Plateau.
A long but rewarding day as you climb through the upper forest and heather zones onto the Shira Plateau. The vegetation transitions from giant heathers to open moorland. Views expand dramatically — on clear days, you can see Mount Meru rising above the clouds to the west. Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) sits on the edge of the plateau with commanding views of the Kibo summit cone.

3
Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Critical acclimatization day — ascend to Lava Tower then descend to Barranco.
The pivotal acclimatization day. Trek across the Shira Plateau to the base of Lava Tower (4,630m), a massive 300-foot volcanic plug. Lunch at altitude allows your body to adapt. The descent to Barranco Camp (3,960m) through the Barranco Valley is dramatic — steep switchbacks through a landscape of giant groundsels and lobelias unique to Kilimanjaro's alpine zone.
Barranco Camp (3,960m)
4
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Scale the iconic Barranco Wall and traverse to Karanga Valley.
Start the morning with the exhilarating Barranco Wall scramble — a hands-on climb up a near-vertical rock face. Despite its intimidating appearance, the route is well-established and thrilling rather than dangerous. From the top, you're rewarded with views of the Southern Icefields. Continue traversing across ridges before descending into Karanga Valley, the last water point before the summit bid.
Karanga Camp (3,995m)
5
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Short ascent to summit base camp — rest and prepare for the final push.
A shorter day, allowing maximum rest. The trail climbs through barren alpine desert to Barafu Camp (4,673m), your launch point for the summit. Arrive early, eat well, hydrate, and attempt to sleep before your midnight wake-up call. The stars above Barafu are magnificent in the thin, clear air.

6
Rest and Preparation Day
A rest day at base camp to acclimatize and mentally prepare for summit night.
An additional rest day at Barafu that sets Lemosho apart from shorter routes. Use this time to hydrate, eat, and let your body fully adjust to the altitude. Your guides will conduct a final briefing on the summit push — timing, clothing layers, emergency procedures. Take short walks around camp to stay limber. As the sun sets, the views are extraordinary — you can see the curvature of the earth from 4,673m.
Barafu Camp (4,673m)
7
Summit Night! Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Midnight ascent to the Roof of Africa — the culmination of your journey.
Depart at midnight for the summit. The steep scree trail is conquered one slow step at a time under the stars. As dawn breaks, you reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. A final traverse brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) as the sun rises over Africa. The glaciers glow pink and gold. After photos and celebrations, descend through Barafu all the way to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Mweka Camp (3,100m)
8
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate — Trek Complete!
Descend through rainforest to collect your summit certificate.
A gentle final morning descent through the lush rainforest zone. The thick canopy and birdsong feel like a different world after the stark alpine desert above. Arrive at Mweka Gate by lunchtime, collect your summit certificate, and celebrate with your team. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi.

“Choosing the 8-day Lemosho was the best decision. The extra acclimatization day made all the difference — our entire group of six summited. The Barranco Wall scramble was a highlight! Highly recommend Nature Nest for Kilimanjaro.”
