Absolutely. East Africa is one of the safest safari destinations in the world for families, and thousands of European and American families travel here every year with children as young as three. The key is choosing the right parks, lodges, and itinerary for your children’s ages.
Nature Nest Safaris has been running family trips across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda for over a decade. Here’s everything you need to know before booking.
The Kazinga Channel boat cruise is a highlight for kids — hippos, elephants, and crocodiles at eye level from a safe boat. Game drives on the Kasenyi Plains deliver lions, buffalo, and Uganda kob without long dusty hours on the road. The famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha are a bonus if your children are patient enough for the drive south.
The Mara is arguably the best Big Five destination for families. Game density is so high that you’ll see lions, elephants, and zebras within the first hour. Many family-friendly camps here have swimming pools, kids’ programmes, and junior ranger activities. If you time it for July to October, your children will witness the Great Migration — a memory that lasts a lifetime.
The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural amphitheatre packed with wildlife. Because everything is concentrated in the crater floor, game drives are shorter — ideal for young children with limited attention spans. The Serengeti works best for families with children aged eight and above who can handle longer drives.
The boat trip to the base of Murchison Falls is thrilling for all ages. Combine it with a game drive on the north bank for giraffes, elephants, and lions. This park is less crowded than the Mara or Serengeti, which means more affordable lodges and a more intimate experience.
Most game drives have no minimum age, but some activities do:
Gorilla trekking (Uganda and Rwanda): Minimum age is 15. No exceptions — this is strictly enforced by wildlife authorities. If you’re travelling with younger children, one parent can trek while the other stays at the lodge with the kids.
Chimpanzee trekking (Kibale Forest, Uganda): Minimum age is 12 for regular tracking, 15 for habituation experiences.
Hot air balloon safaris (Serengeti/Mara): Most operators set a minimum age of 7, though some accept children as young as 5 if accompanied by an adult.
Walking safaris: Generally 16 and above for armed bush walks. Some lodges offer shorter, guided nature walks suitable for children aged 8+.
A mid-range family safari for two adults and two children (aged 5-12) typically costs:
Uganda (7 days): $6,500–$9,000 total — includes game drives, boat cruises, accommodation, meals, and internal transfers. Children under 5 often stay free at lodges; ages 5-12 get 30-50% discounts.
Kenya (7 days): $7,000–$11,000 total — the Mara’s family camps offer all-inclusive packages with kids’ activities. Park fees for children under 12 are heavily discounted.
Tanzania (7 days): $8,000–$14,000 total — Tanzania’s park fees are higher, but the Serengeti and Ngorongoro combination is unbeatable. Budget lodges outside the parks can bring costs down significantly.
Not every safari lodge welcomes young children, so it’s important to book the right ones. We work with lodges that offer family rooms or interconnecting tents, children’s menus, babysitting services, and junior ranger programmes. Some of our favourites include properties on the Mara conservancies that offer exclusive-use family villas, and crater-rim lodges in Ngorongoro with heated pools.
Pack binoculars for each child — spotting animals becomes a game. Bring a wildlife identification book so they can tick off species. Keep game drives to 3-4 hours maximum for children under 8. Choose lodges with pools — kids need downtime between drives. And don’t skip the cultural visits — Maasai village tours and community walks are often children’s favourite memories.
