1
Kilembe to Sine Camp (2,596m)
Enter the Rwenzori through tropical forest alive with primates and birdsong.
Begin at Kilembe at the base of the Rwenzori range. The trail climbs steeply through tropical rainforest thick with bamboo, ferns, and moss-draped trees. Listen for the calls of L'Hoest's monkeys and Rwenzori turacos. Cross several cascading streams on log bridges. After 5–6 hours of climbing through increasingly dramatic scenery, you arrive at Sine Camp (2,596m), set in a clearing surrounded by giant tree ferns.

2
Sine Camp to Mutinda Camp (3,688m)
Ascend through bamboo forest into the extraordinary heather zone.
A steep and rewarding day as you climb from the bamboo zone into the giant heather forest. Trees festooned with old man's beard moss create a mystical atmosphere. The trail is often muddy — the Rwenzori receives heavy rainfall year-round. As you gain altitude, the giant heathers give way to open moorland with views of the surrounding peaks. Mutinda Camp (3,688m) offers spectacular sunset views over the Congo basin.

3
Mutinda Camp to Bugata Camp (4,062m)
Trek through otherworldly Afro-alpine landscape to Bugata with Mutinda Lookout views.
Start with a side trip to Mutinda Lookout for panoramic views of the central peaks, including Mount Stanley and its glaciers. The trail then traverses through the most spectacular Afro-alpine scenery — giant groundsels (Dendrosenecio) tower overhead like something from a Dr. Seuss book, and giant lobelias dot the landscape. The terrain is boggy in places, requiring careful footwork. Arrive at Bugata Camp (4,062m) in a dramatic mountain cirque.

4
Bugata to Hunwick's Camp via Bamwanjara Pass (4,568m)
Cross the highest point of the trek at Bamwanjara Pass with breathtaking glacier views.
The biggest day of the trek. Climb through rocky terrain and boulders to Bamwanjara Pass (4,568m), the highest point of the circuit. On clear days, you can see the glaciers of Mount Stanley and the summit of Margherita Peak (5,109m). The pass is often shrouded in mist, adding an ethereal quality. Descend the other side into a different valley system, arriving at Hunwick's Camp (3,974m) near a beautiful glacial lake.

5
Hunwick's Camp to Guy Yeoman Camp (3,261m)
Descend through the enchanted moss forest to the valley below.
Begin the descent back into the forest zones. The trail drops through moss-draped heather forest that feels prehistoric — every surface is carpeted in thick green moss. Cross several streams and enjoy the feeling of thickening air. Guy Yeoman Camp (3,261m) sits in a magical glade surrounded by giant heathers and bamboo. The campsite is named after one of the early Rwenzori explorers.

6
Guy Yeoman Camp to Kiharo Camp (2,633m)
Continue descending through lush bamboo forest teeming with wildlife.
The trail continues downward through dense bamboo forest and tropical vegetation. The air grows warmer and more humid. Birding is excellent today — watch for Rwenzori batis, handsome francolin, and various sunbirds. The forest is also home to chimpanzees, though they are rarely seen. Arrive at Kiharo Camp (2,633m), your last night in the mountains.

7
Kiharo Camp to Kilembe — Trek Complete!
Final descent back to Kilembe — your Rwenzori circuit is complete!
The final descent through the lower rainforest back to Kilembe. The trail passes through community farmland in the lower reaches, offering a window into local life in the Rwenzori foothills. Arrive by lunchtime, congratulate your guides and porters, and celebrate completing the Central Circuit of the legendary Mountains of the Moon.
