You’ll pass through bamboo forest, cross moorlands dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels, and camp beside pristine alpine lakes.
The route approaches from the eastern side, starting near Chogoria town in Tharaka-Nithi County. It joins the Summit Circuit at around 4,200 metres, from where climbers ascend Point Lenana (4,985m), the highest trekking peak on Mount Kenya.
The chogoria route mt kenya trek typically takes 4 to 5 days:
Day 1: Drive from Nairobi to Chogoria Gate (2,950m). Hike through montane forest to the roadhead. Distance: ~10 km.
Day 2: Trek across moorland to Lake Ellis (3,480m), continue to Mintos Hut or Hall Tarns. Distance: 15-18 km.
Day 3: Acclimatisation day exploring the Gorges Valley, one of East Africa’s most spectacular glacial valleys.
Day 4: Summit push to Point Lenana (4,985m) starting around 3:00 AM. Descend to Shipton’s Camp.
Day 5: Descend via Sirimon route to the gate and transfer to Nairobi.
The mount kenya chogoria route is moderate to challenging. No technical climbing skills needed for Point Lenana, but altitude demands respect and good fitness.
Best months: January to March and July to October (dry seasons). February and September offer the clearest skies.
Lake Ellis: Serene alpine lake at 3,480m with eland, buffalo, and occasionally leopard nearby.
Gorges Valley: Glacially carved valley with vertical rock walls, waterfalls, and Lake Michaelson below.
The Temple: Striking rock formation near the head of Gorges Valley.
Hall Tarns: Alpine lakes at 4,300m surrounded by giant groundsels and lobelias.
KWS park fees for non-residents: approximately $52/day. A fully guided 5-day trek costs $900-$1,400 per person including transport, fees, guide, porters, meals, and camping equipment. All climbers must have a registered guide.
