Chogoria Route Mt Kenya: The Complete Trekking Guide 2026

Published July 14, 2026 · Nature Nest Safaris · 5 min read

Why the Chogoria Route Is Mt Kenya’s Most Scenic Trek

The Chogoria route is widely regarded as the most beautiful approach to Mt Kenya’s summit, winding through pristine bamboo forests, moorlands dotted with giant lobelias, and past the stunning Lake Michaelson — a glacial tarn nestled in a dramatic gorge. For trekkers seeking a route that combines breathtaking scenery with a genuine wilderness experience, Chogoria delivers in ways that the busier Naro Moru and Sirimon routes simply cannot match.

At 4,985 metres, Mt Kenya is Africa’s second-highest peak and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Chogoria route approaches from the eastern side of the mountain, offering panoramic views across the Ithanguni Hills and the vast plains below. Most climbers use Chogoria as the ascent route and descend via Naro Moru or Sirimon, creating a traverse that showcases the mountain’s diverse landscapes.

Chogoria Route Itinerary: Day by Day

Day 1: Chogoria Town to Meru Mt Kenya Bandas (3,000m)

The trek begins in Chogoria town, where you meet your guide and porters. A 4×4 vehicle takes you through the forest zone to the park gate, then continues on a rough track to the Meru Mt Kenya Bandas at 3,000 metres. The drive passes through dense montane forest — keep your eyes open for black-and-white colobus monkeys, bushbuck, and forest elephants. The bandas offer basic accommodation with beds and cooking facilities, giving you a comfortable first night to begin acclimatisation.

Day 2: Bandas to Lake Ellis (3,500m)

Today’s hike takes you out of the forest and into the moorland zone. The trail crosses several clear streams and passes through fields of tussock grass and giant heather. Lake Ellis appears as a peaceful, reed-fringed lake set in open moorland — an ideal lunch spot. Camp is set up near the lake, where the evening light paints the surrounding hills in gold and amber. Walking time is approximately 5–6 hours.

Day 3: Lake Ellis to Lake Michaelson (4,000m)

This is the day that defines the Chogoria route. The trail climbs steadily through increasingly dramatic scenery, with giant groundsels and lobelias — prehistoric-looking plants found only at high altitude in East Africa — appearing alongside the path. The arrival at Lake Michaelson is unforgettable: a deep, emerald-green lake sitting at the base of sheer cliffs that drop hundreds of metres from the peaks above. Camp is set near the lake at around 4,000 metres. Walking time is 5–7 hours.

Day 4: Lake Michaelson to Austrian Hut (4,790m)

From Lake Michaelson, the trail ascends steeply through a rocky gorge toward the head of the Gorges Valley. The terrain becomes more alpine, with scree slopes and rocky outcrops replacing the moorland vegetation. You arrive at Austrian Hut, a basic stone shelter at 4,790 metres that serves as the base for the summit attempt. Rest and hydrate — you’ll be waking before dawn.

Day 5: Summit Attempt — Point Lenana (4,985m)

The alarm sounds at 2:00 AM. The final push to Point Lenana takes 3–4 hours over rocky terrain, with the last section requiring some scrambling. Reaching the summit at sunrise is the reward: the first light illuminates the jagged peaks of Batian and Nelion, while the Lewis Glacier gleams below. On clear mornings, you can see both Kilimanjaro and the Indian Ocean coastline. After photos and celebration, descend to Austrian Hut for breakfast, then continue down via the Naro Moru or Sirimon route.

Chogoria Route Difficulty and Fitness Requirements

The Chogoria route is rated as moderate to challenging. No technical climbing equipment is needed for Point Lenana (the trekking peak), but you should be in good physical condition and comfortable walking 6–8 hours per day over uneven terrain. The main challenge is altitude — proper acclimatisation is essential, which is why the standard itinerary includes at least 4 days of ascent.

Previous trekking experience is helpful but not mandatory. If you can comfortably hike 15–20 kilometres in hilly terrain at sea level, you have the baseline fitness for the Chogoria route. That said, altitude affects everyone differently regardless of fitness level.

Best Time to Climb Mt Kenya via Chogoria

The two main trekking seasons are January to March and June to October, corresponding to the dry seasons. July through September offers the most reliable weather, with clear skies and minimal rainfall. The January–February window is also excellent, with fewer trekkers on the mountain.

The rainy seasons (April–May and November–December) make the Chogoria route significantly more challenging. The forest tracks become muddy and slippery, and cloud cover often obscures the views that make this route special. It’s still possible to climb during these months, but conditions are less predictable.

What to Pack for the Chogoria Route

Essential gear includes a warm sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C, layered clothing (base layer, insulating layer, waterproof shell), sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, a headlamp for the summit attempt, and sun protection including high-SPF sunscreen and quality sunglasses. Trekking poles are highly recommended for the steep descents.

Your tour operator will typically provide tents, cooking equipment, and meals. Porters carry the bulk of the gear, but you’ll need a daypack for water, snacks, camera, and extra layers during the daily hikes.

Chogoria Route Costs and Permits

Park entry fees for Mt Kenya National Park are $52 per day for international adults. A typical 5-day Chogoria route trek with a reputable operator costs between $800 and $1,500 per person, including guide fees, porter charges, park fees, meals, and camping equipment. Budget options start around $600, while premium guided experiences with smaller group sizes can reach $2,000.
